simple question, I have a 1WATT 808nm Diode, was wondering if i could shove it in one of my 5 dollar greenies with a custom driver and some cooling (I dont know the ins and outs of DPSS).

I don't think that will work becuase you will over saturate the crystals. I'm pretty sure a cheaper 5mW doesn't have big enough crystals to convery anymore infrared to green. Someone correct me if I'm wrong here.

depends on how much capacity the crystal set has left. It will not turn a 5mw into a 200mw, but you might get 50-80mw peak out of it. I've got a leadlight I modded that runs ~84mw peak but drops pretty quickly to 50mw and after a while will drop to 20mw and stay there. The crystal can't handle the excess heat and expands and that throws off the cavity optics.

Once the crystal becomes saturated with 808, at that point no matter how much more power you put into it it isn't going to get any more conversion to green. Also if you put way too much in you'll fry/cook the crystal and get a line in the middle.

Also if you do overdrive the crap out of the crystal you'll likely go beyond the AR coatings and the IR filter and start leaking more IR.

Lining up a diode with a crystal is also a pain in the ass. the diode and crystal has apolarity o you have to line it up to go in the middle and also spin it until you get it right. then you have to keep it right there and glue or affix ot whatever everyting and hope it doesn't move. A slight offset can drop the power by 50% or more.
