Can you please help identify my laser pen?

Hi Everyone,

First post. I am trying to identify what laser pen I have got. I bought it from a guy at a British Touring Car race last year for £15, and its great fun.

I would like to get another like it, but I dont know what to look for, so hoped someone on this forum could help identify it for me, and perhaps more specifically, what sort of power it is.

I have taken a series of photos in the hope this will help identify it. The first set is of the beam it makes.

This first pic is a reference pic of my house hallway in the dark:

This next pic is the laser pen starting in what I call the "power-up" mode, where it is initially dimmer. Is this a usual function of laser pens? Or does mine have some sort of fault?

This next pic is when the laser pen "ramps up" in power, which happens afer what feels like a random period of time, and if the batteries are not powerful enough, will not happen at all:

Can anyone estimate what sort of power this laser might be?

This last pic is of the laser pen itself:

The only identifying mark is the word "Sky" on the clip.

Many thanks for any assistance!

Cheers,
Steve

The fact that it says "sky" on it suggests it is a skylasers model. I did a quick search and they no longer seem to have a website. While I've never seen that particular laser before, it looks to be a standard "Newish" / "NewWish" style laser that has been stripped of the normal black paint.

You might try searching through eBay for sky or sky lasers and see if you can come up with one.

If you don't care about it being black, newish lasers are on every cheap laser website. Most are overspec, but are typical crap quality. They rarely last very long, but for the price it's worth it to grab several.

Agreed with the above , it's the same without the black paint.
This looks just like my first green laser as well, though that's long been gone (I was a little kid when I had it, of course it broke :p)

However, to add: I found that exact one on amazon here.

Many thanks for the replies.

Examining the photo where the laser is at full power, is this what you would expect of a 5mw laser? I bought a cheap red 5mw from EBay and it is considerably dimmer.

Is it normal for the laser to "ramp up" in power after the button had been pressed for a while?

It's really not possible to guess laser power from a photo. Especially one that doesn't contain a second laser of known power.

What I can tell you; our eyes are much more sensitive to green light then to red. See this tool to judge relative brightness between different wavelengths of lasers.

red lasers are normally either 650 or 660nm
Green are 532nm

Dot: (650nm 5mw) vs. (532nm 5mw)

Yes, for DPSS lasers. Those are the common 532nm greens, 473nm blues, as well as 593.5nm or 589nm lasers (plus many, many more.) This happens as the insides are temperature sensitive, and sometimes they "like" to warm up, and you may notice if they're on for too long they "like" to cool down.
