rofl look at the green lasers, they sell a couple that are the same ones they sell in dx and they over priced it

example

3-4.8mw ?? rofl
http://www.optotronics.com/proddetail.php?prod=glp-04

4.99mw
http://www.optotronics.com/proddetail.php?prod=glp-05

not sure about the others but they all look the same like the ones sold at dx
they are more expensive because they are not the same, and they are legal plus and they are tested. what we really go there for is the rpls anyways

DX sells untested crap. The ones Opto are selling are tested, and will be in spec. Would you want to buy a "5mW" laser from DX, to use it for lectures and stuff like that, and find out that it's out of spec so you can't use it? The penstyles are all Newwish, but will be inspec, unlike DX.

i wouldn't buy DX, you cant even garuntee the laser will work, and it takes up to a month to get a simple laser, but if your ok with that, you get what you pay for

the 100mW "pot mod" isn't worth the hassle, especially because they say they wont ship to the US. although a Dilda would be worth the money.

I'm still going to go with skylasers for this reasons,  all lasers are 100% legal and FDA approved, and heres a biggy maybe for this thread,

It's located in California.

But they ship from China.  Despite all of their FDA number info on their site, my package was listed as a $60 flashlight to go through customs.  Also, I ordered mine before they put on their website that the batteries are not included so I have my laser now, but the batteries aren't in yet.

Their website says they test them before sending and supply power info.  Mine did not arrive with such info.  I will be contacting them about this lack of info.

Heh, is the FDA restriction on fully built laser pointers, or diodes/modules as well?

My understanding is that it is only for fully-built lasers sold to others.  If you make your own DIY-project you're free to do whatever you want so long as you don't start trying to sell/market it.

Also, although I like most of the FDA safety restricsion (just like that I like the safety on my pistol, keeps the feet on the ends of my legs, thankyouverymuch) I don't think there are rules against modifying an FDA-approved device after you legally purchase it.  However, use it irresponsibly, and those modifications may show intent which could counter any defense of "oops."  And then you couldn't sell/market your then-modified product.

Some of my friends try to make an analogy to guns, but with differing rules for those with federal firearms licenese and licensed gunsmiths and older and legal full-auto guns around, I think the best analogy is to a car.  To market a consumer vehicle in the US you have to meet emissions rules.  Similarly, to get your car inspected to operate on the road, you need to have things like a muffler.  But, you can modify you car for racing, making it non-street-legal and run with no muffler.  You can also custom build a vehicle for racing and you aren't restricted by the emissions laws (there may be rules by your racing league's sactioning body, but that varies from league to league).  But, you can't make a vehicle with illegal exhaust and then market/sell this off your lot for people to drive home using public roads.

But, that being said, I haven't seen many folks discussing how to circumvent the FDA safety devices on their lasers, although several of them are quite simple with just a soldering iron.

on behalf of optotronics, i would like to increase your knowlege. optotronics builds/assembles our lasers, from only the best components. we do use another brand for our internals, but they are the best quality, sold exclusively to us. those pen pointers that you see are our own. those DX lasers are crummy, with poor beam quality

Hence, price is cheap so the laser is cheap. :D
