Once I remove the top from a 5 mW green laser pointer, what is the best way to remove the diode without damaging it?

take a rod, and bang it onto the side with the spring. It should come out with damage if it is not too tightly pressed in

What kind of "rod" can I use? A pen or something?

I've also heard pliers or tweezers might work, but I'm not sure.

The pump diode is usually mounted to the module with a threaded collar. This is between the large module and the driver board. You may have to disconnect the power sensor wires first and get rid of glue.
The diode is carefully alligned with the crystals in front of the diode so be careful.

I watched that video --- yours is a different laser and probably does not have the same driver. I don't know where he got a pen which unscrews at the front so it's probably and old under rated laser with big crystals.

It looks like yours will have to be pushed out toward the rear. I'd use a small screwdriver making sure you don't push on the glass lens. It might come out or you might damage the laser module. Don't remove the diode.

SB --

You have posted abunch of stuff on here all answered elsewhere on this forum. So far, all your questions were answered long ago including your questions on a couple other threads you made here.

Give your fingers a rest and READ.

Re: Best way to remove diode from green laser poin

I read the "Basic FAQ's... Read before posting!" sticky, and it didn't answer all of my questions.

My only questions now are where to buy my needed equipment. Thanks.

EDIT: I searched for "pot mod" in the Green Lasers forum and my questions still weren't answered. Also, I live in the US and anything over 5 mW is prohibited. So reading posts that say "Don't pot mod! Buy a more powerful laser instead!" doesn't help me at all. And even if they were legal, there is no way in Hell I could afford a $600 laser pointer. FYI.

^That's incorrect, lasers greater than 5mW are perfectly legal in the US. You can own, use, possess any power of laser that you want. It is illegal to SELL (and therefore buy) or IMPORT lasers greater than 5mW, EXCEPT lasers that are FDA approved. Luckily, there are many lasers over 5mW that are fully FDA-approved, so they can bought and imported effortlessly, without breaking any laws.

So yes, you can buy an Optotronics or whatever power laser you want, as long as it's FDA approved. Can't afford a more powerful laser? Oh well. Think of lasers like cars. I can't afford a fast car. I would love to drive a Porsche, but I drive a Nissan instead because that's what I can afford. With cars, there's no way to buy a cheap car, turn up a rev limiter, and turn it into a Porsche. It's the same with lasers: you can't buy a $30 laser, turn a knob, and expect it to work the same as a $600 laser. It doesn't work that way with anything else, why would it work that way with lasers?

You can buy a 80-100mW module at http://o-like.com/b2b_cpinfo.asp?id=909 and swap out the lower powered module with it but it may be a little different.

Like I mentioned in another topic, there is no way I am buying from an unsecured, unencrypted site with no privacy policy that asks for my credit card info via e-mail.

Can I buy something like that from another site? It doesn't have to be green.

In that case, where can I buy the cheapest FDA approved laser that is 80 to 100 mW?

Also, I want to get this clear from the onset: I don't care if my pot modded laser doesn't last long. So all these posts telling me that this will shorten the life of the laser really isn't productive at all.

First.. if you want to buy something on the internet... more or less securely....
get yourself a PayPal account...

If you want a high power (>5mW-Non Green) burning laser get a Red 200mW
from "o-like" for $45.00....  :-/

If you want to pot mod a $15.00 5mW into a $600.00 burner... you are dreaming in color... :'(
And if you "don't care" if you blow it.... we don't care either... :'(

In addition... if you think all the members here responding to your (already asked and answered)
questions "isn't productive" then I guess you're wasting your time here... :'(

Let me get this clear from the onset: Some of us don't care whether you care or not -- we care.

Someone may eventually help you.  However, some of us will continue to tell you what you are doing is a bad thing.  This is NOT just because your laser will die.  It is also because we get several people a month coming on here with a broken heart because their laser died after "pot modding" it.  Where do you think they got the idea that "pot modding" would work? . . . . . . . From posts and questions like yours.

You want a brighter laser?  Build a brighter laser or buy a brighter laser.

I know how to pot mod most "modable" lasers.  However, I rarely share that information with NooB's.  This information is available all over the net.  If you want to find it out, it is out there.  Many people who don't care or who actually WANT you to destroy your laser have posted it there.  If you come into a community that cares and ask how to destroy your laser, you are going to get more than just blind answers to your questions

Just because I know something that you want to know does not obligate me to tell you.

Peace,
dave

Oh okay. Sorry for the drama. I failed to realize that destroying a laser pointer is a terrible thing.

It's just like Monty Python says: every 5 mW green laser pointer is sacred, and every 5 mW green laser pointer is good.

Unless they were singing about sperm.

I don't remember.
