Whats the best green laser I could buy for $1400-1500? I would prefer a handheld but a labby is fine too. I want it to last long and have a decent duty cycle. any suggestions?


I see the opto RPL 425
Laserglow herc 325
Dragonlasers hulk ultra 400

anyone know any others to look at? and which do you guys think is the best laser?

For that price you could probably get a much better(more powerful) labby that would have pretty much no duty cycle and would actually last a loooong time, but a pointer has its advantages of being super portable.

You should get in touch with Gottalovelasers, he is a national dealer for Laser-Wave and could probably get you a nice price :)

Personally, If I were back in the market at that price range I'd look for another Hercules, you can often find used Herc 350's or 375's for around that price ... No duty cycle like the other handhelds out there, uses regular "off the shelf" batteries, can be used with an AC adapter for experimentation, etc, has TTL modulation input (again, great for messing with scanners, etc) and IMHO the best beam characteristics and stability available at ANY price.

I know that laser glow usually sends units that put more power out than described, so what can I expect of a 325 herc? also how good are the beam specs? does it mode hop at all?

Go to Optotronics.com and look at the RPL 425! It is $1400.00.....Way less than Laser Glow and Better. Laser glow has a duty cycle on their lasers, The new style Optotronics RPL does not. The laser diodes are made in the USA and have better heat sinks. Beam divergence is 0.8~1.0mrad....best in the industry. www.optotronics.com Tell Jack Todd sent you.

My rpl doenst have a duty cycle it can run till the battery s dead
according to jacks site info i have ran it ten minutes no prob the battery get low and it loses some output but other than that no problems go for optotronics USA distributer baby !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would look into getting a Class IV lab laser.
1W of green with no duty cycle and superior stability sounds more fun than ~400mW portable.
Anyway, what's the point in getting a portable laser if it's too big to fit in your pocket? Where do you plan on taking it?
Chances are good that it won't leave the house very often anyway.

I would actually go for a labby rather than a portable laser. You will get WAY more power for the money and really, a huge "portable" with huge power does not have that many uses. You would have to be extremely careful whenever using it and would probably not bother bringing it along at most times because of the size. It would be awesome for some weeks and then grow a bit old IMHO.
Even though a Herc does have TTL input to use for a scanner it is so much less power for the money.
You might even consider spending only about $600 on a 300mW green labby and then with the rest of the money you could afford a scanner and a DAC and have yourself a one colour scanner, with potential for adding more colours later.
Only ideas obviously, but that is what I would do :)

Like bridge (who is from the laserwave company) says, you could get a 1W labby for that amount of money.

I'd do that.
