Hi, I was hoping you guys could help me in the right direction. I want to get my first greenie for about $50 bucks. I was wondering what do you guys recommend?

Yes just like eudaimonium stated, stay away from the shops like DX, get a rayfoss or o-like laser, you will be impressed and wont have 80% IR from it and 20% 532nm

Thanks for the reply. I actually bought the super beast green 005 and 2 laser pens one violet and one green, all for 35 bucks. The reason is because I want to learn about them,this way i can mess around with the 2 pens and learn as I go.

I'm going to save some money for my next one. Probably ill try to either buy the survival kit 1w and build it, or buy the parts and build one or maybe just buy an already built one. We will see.

I also wanted to ask where can I find a Laser power meter ? Would it be cheaper to build one, i'm all for that. :D

P.S. Sorry for my grammar. English is my second language.:(

It indeed would be cheaper to build one, but it's no small task.
You would need to know advanced digital circuitry, how to program a MCU , and you must have an LPM to calibrate your own LPM to be accurate.
It's very complicated.

I'd advise you to buy one premade.
 
$6 ebay green pointer. They are always overspec and perfect for a beginner

No it is not, they are usually oversppec in IR, so it is sill 5mW 532nm but 50mW 808nm, this is very dangerous,
and when they stop working some beginners accidently look into it and wonder why their is a little red light and get hit smack in the face with IR light.
I highly recomend to get a decent laser,

50mW IR?! they only register 20-30mW on average so they must have -20mW of 532nm. that is horrible *sarcasm*

no $50 greenie is going to have an IR filter so I dont see a higher power laser in the hands of a beginner being any safer.



Visually they put out quite a bit of green and for $6 you have $44 left for safety goggles. Seems like the perfect beginner laser to me.:beer:

Rarely does the IR amount surpass the green amount, but it is known to happen in especially crappy laser pointers (not exactly deserving of the title).

I would strongly suggest AGAINST buying laser pointers on Ebay, DX, and likes.

If you need a green laser, don't save few dollars and have your laser die on you within a month.
Buy a proper laser, like ones from O-like, which will last long time.

i know that alot is IR and I never said they were good lasers but they are cheap and leave lots of money from proper safety equipment.

if he wants a good laser he needs a high budget
 
check out wlaser, they sell a 100mw 532nm for $50. I have bought from them before and was very satisfied. Also if you are not happy they will refund your money 100% satisfaction guarantee ;)

I recommend checking out sampson's Super Beast thread. In it, you will find links to a #005, a #006, and a #100. The first two cost ~ $19 and run ~50mW actual on good batteries (with IR columnated and ~15mW of that 50); the #100 costs $28 and runs >100mW (mine peaks at 156mW!).

I'm thinking of ordering more ...
 
I'd also like to add a correction here.

Most of the IR that leaks out is actually 808nm, not 1064nm. You can't see 1064nm, and if you can, chances are you've already incurred permanent eye damage.

Also, if you get that much 1064nm leakage, it means your doubler is f :) cked. But that's beside the point.

eBay pointers really are luck-of-the-draw. Sometimes you'll get a good one, sometimes it'll be DOA, or sometimes it'll be in-between. You never know, and for that reason, it's probably better to stay away from them.

Your standard goggles may protect you from green very well, but they won't do anything for IR.

Remember, even though it's invisible, it can, and will, cause eye damage. Better get a good, IR filtered pointer than risk your eyesight.

AtlasNova and Z-Bolt both stock good 'eye-safe' <5mW pointers in both 532nm (green), 635nm (orangish-red) and 650nm (red), and at decent prices too (much less than LaserGlow's stuff). Here, a few links:

On top of that, I'm sure he's seen the thread about IR leakage, and knows what it is. And I'm sure he wouldn't look down the barrel of a dead laser.

Rayfoss and O-Like both install IR filters free of charge, something you won't get from an eBay seller. And with an IR filter, none of the IR would be able to get out, even if it did die.

I like the green beast series from item ships quick on ebay. The standard was less than 20 shipped and the 100 was less than 30 shipped here are my LPM results for stable mw output. My only suggestion is get some rechargeable CR123 batteries the best is hungry and the regular 3.0 volt guys do not last too long.
