Ok... I have been reading through these forums for days now.. :)
So much awesome information... I cannot WAIT to get a nice new laser to shine around town.

My question:
What is the BEST laser you can get that is in the 150-200mw range and for around $200...

From what I am gathering...
Optotronics Product Details

looks to be a great option...
Might there be others?
Thanks in advance !

Pen style lasers at such high powers often need a strict duty cycle.. I think I would get one of these instead: Rayfoss

I have been looking at that as well... how is the quality of the laser itself? Plus.. does it lack an IR filter? And lastly... does it ship with a battery and the charger?

Simple answer.........Is by all means yes. I have a 150mw pen from Optotronics and was worried about the same thing before it came. This thing is incredible, no heat issues what so ever. I thought the duty cycle would be a issue, but its not. I'm always blasting it on and can't put it down. I couldn't be happier. Will be getting another soon.

No, does not ship with a battery or charger, but I use rechargeable Duracell 1000mAh and they work great. A quick charger will charge them in 15 minutes.

Ahh.. perfect..
Plus.. they say that is is 60/60 duty cycle.. which, more than likely is around 80/80 or so..
i dont know how often i would blast it for over that anyway...
I am definitely leaning towards that 150 opt pen..

Can I assume that popping in a couple of AAA lithium batteries will do this pen justice?

Well, it comes with a warning to not use lithium batteries. Trust me, 1000mAh rechargeables will give it plenty of pop. Don't worry about the duty cycle to much unless your planning on leaving you finger on the button for minutes at a time. I've been blasting mine for about 30 secs on and 3 secs off over and over all night outside at my job and it never got warm or lost any power. This is on hot summer nights too. Once you get one, you will understand. I love this thing. You won't regret it.

A warning. Looking at the green dot (after 25 feet, its not bad) is extremely bright.........like looking at the sun. I didn't believe what others said in this forum to get safety glasses but they were right. You will need them when using it indoors.

I'd get a laser that's a little bigger than a pen, but I think optotronics lasers are supposed to have very tight beams, so much better for burning

All n all... I do think that the opt pen is the best "beam for the buck"...
I would really like a nice portable laser, but for the money.. i cannot justify the $400+ price range for a trusted (and undoubtedly awesome) brand.
As long as this pen can last me into my golden years with careful use and no loss of vision or severe erectile dysfunction, I will be happy as one can be..

if anyone has any other last minute suggests.. feel free to list em !!

I received an opto 150mW last week. I have had several greens 120mW CNI, 55mW ebay, and a 150mW black chrome. The opto rocks dude, I literally cant set it down..

Buy it. You will be happy.

Buy safety goggles.
You may not think you need them until it's too late.
Even a reflection of a 150mW 532nm is nothing to laugh at when it hits your eye.

Arrrrrr

definitely. i was looking for one(or two) as you sent that :)
can the indirect light, such as the dot itself cause damage? For the most part, I am treating this as a gun. I want to make sure people around me are protected as well.

Well. Yes. Just as looking at the sun for too long will damage your eyes. Simply looking at the dot on a glossy white wall indoors from a powerful green can do eye damage, and if you happen to accidentally reflect it off a window, TV, drinking glass, mirror or other shiny surface and that beam hits your eye it can do damage much much faster than you can blink.
It can be done - Lasers are not toys

This is my mantra:
Only let my eyes be naked when I am laying on the ground outside destroying stars and totally eradicating all the angels in heaven.

(Plus, I have a personal vendetta against santa claus.. he already has seen way too much)

I hope there is not a lot of air-traffic around you.
According to federal authorities, there have been about 400 reported instances of hand-held lasers being aimed at aircraft since the early 1990s.
example:
A pilot flying a Delta Air Lines jet was injured by a laser that illuminated the cockpit of the aircraft as it approached Salt Lake City International Airport last week (Sep. 28, 2004), U.S. officials said.
The plane's two pilots reported that the Boeing 737 had been five miles from the airport when they saw a laser beam inside the cockpit, said officials familiar with government reports of the Sept. 22 incident. The flight, which originated in Dallas, landed without further incident at about 9:30 p.m. local time.
A short while later, however, the first officer felt a stinging sensation in one eye. A doctor who examined the pilot determined that he had suffered a burned retina from exposure to a laser device, the officials said.
Transportation Security Administration (TSA) spokeswoman Yolanda Clark confirmed the incident, but declined to provide details.
