Beam difference between 100mW and 200mW?

Hello laser experts,

When using for pointing to stars in the night / dusky sky, does a 200mW beam look much stronger than a 100mW?

I ask because i want to buy a laser for pointing. I know 50mW is enough for pointing, but i want the coolest possible beam. But i dont want to add the extra power if the beam difference is not that much. Also I have noticed that there are much cooler and compact hosts / models for 100mW as compared to the 150 /200s

Recommendations anyone?

From what I've read the laser has to be 4 times the power to see a major difference, so you may be wasting your money.

I have shown my Spyder I beam right beside my Evolution beam, the 250 is more solid looking and brighter than the 150 Evo, but they both appear to go equal distances and the Evo is still impressive, just not as bright a beam it's easily noticed. -Glenn

I agree with scopeguy. He has shown me first hand as has daguin. The beam is a bit more solid and a little brighter but is still very close to the same unless quite a bit more of a power difference. I would save some money and just go for the middle 100mW. But even the 50mW's are awesome.

Hey cool! you guys saved me some money here! thanks! :) So when you people build / buy 200+mW lasers, they are primarily for burning? Or is it cuz you gotta have the most powerful laser possible? :)

Scopeguy do you have beamshots of your comparison somewhere online?

What T_J said ^

Theres not a big difference at all but you can still say you have a 200mW greenie haha. That's about it.

This is the same set up with a <50 mW and with a 130 mW

Yes the second one looks a lot brighter but you have to also take into consideration the fog which would cause more dissipation of light. Virtually any beam is brighter with fog. But without that just side by side there isn't much of a difference.

The difference between 100 and 200mW is much more noticeable when burning rather than when pointing at the sky, which isn't a great improve.
