Hi everyone,

I've been browsing the forums for a while, but decided to join after getting my first green pointer. I got it in the mail today and it works great, but I'm wondering if anyone has any experience adjusting the divergence/focus (same thing?) on an inexpensive pointer like this one? I'm mainly wanting the beam to be tighter so when I'm pointing at a surface it's not a green blob. For short distances in the living room it's not to bad, but for longer distances 500 - 600 feet it's a large green blob.

I had a small key chain 3 button cell red pointer for 12 - 13 years, but has recently vanished. I'm not sure if I should blame the cats or not. Anyway, the focus on it was amazing. Around the same distance it was still pretty decent dot and very visible. I still remember playing laser dot games on the side of a building with 5 or 6 other pointers while waiting for the 4th of July fireworks.

Here's the url of the pointer I purchased. http://www.ledshoppe.com/Product/ledp/LP1085.htm

Thanks,

Kage

I don't believe this one can be focused. It doesn't say anything about focus on the web page.
At 500-600 feet, a spot 1-1/2" to 3" would be considered "normal" divergence for a cheap laser. Bad for a lab quality, but not out of the norm for a $15 Chinese Import. (for $15, all you can realistically expect is ,it will lase)

12 or 13 years ago Chinese pointers were much better quality then they are now. I have one from around late '80's early '90's that the workmanship is on par with CNI.
I think I paid around $50 for it back then

look at the internal module, perhaps you can adjust the position of the lens by screwing it (be very careful and never touch the lens!)

I've tried to get the front cap off but the sucker is on there really well. Since I just got it I would rather not destroy it the first week :). Maybe if I get a new one.

As for the red one that is lost it was purchased at a Loves Travel stop for $12 all those years ago.

From 50cm up the point measures around 5mm, but there is a halo that's around 20 mm. It's a bit odd that sometimes the halo is really visible and other times it's not, like you mentioned it's most likely due to the inconsistencies/cheapness of the pointer.

A side question, is there enough IR reflected off of a surface to worry about when close to the surface that the laser is being projected on?

Under 200mW ,IR is not usually not a problem. As long as you don't hold it against the side of your head, right next to your eye(s) you will be OK.
Surface reflected IR in a 5mW is almost nonexistent.

Well it seems my new pointer has already died. Friday the dot was very weak and finally died. I figured it was the battery and got a new AAA on Saturday. I popped it in, but it is still broke. When I hit the button the green flashes for a brief second and then all that is left is a very faint red at the tip which I'm assuming is the IR from the diode.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to fix it? I'm going to email LEDSHoppe to see what I can do to get a replacement.
