500mw ebay laser diode, 1.25A SL driver, SL green button cover, DTR 3 element lens, SL focus adaptor, ricktrent host and heatsink. I measured it max 566mw, but the output starts to fall after a minute or so probably due to thermal buildup or these cheap GTL batteries.

The diode didn't fit snug in the module, so I stuck some fine copper wires in with the diode so I could press it in along with some thermal grease. Then I squished some JB Weld in the relief cuts between the diode base and the module. I hope it isn't falling out. I'm probably going to double check tomorrow, but it's doing fine now.

Dat spring, doh. I had to fuse 3 laser pointer springs together to make one long enough so the batteries would make contact, and they are barely generating any force. Edit: That can be fixed just by pushing the module back farther. The inner diameter of the battery tube is anodized black, so I'm not worried about rxθ. If your spring isn't long enough, you can also stick some Nd magnets to it until it contacts. The other problem I had with this host was discussed in this thread. That empty space cuts electrical contact. I used solder wire instead cuz that's what I had.

Glamour shots!

Don't ever point a laser at liquid unless everyone in the area has safety glasses and there's no aircraft overhead.

Awesome build, thanks for posting! Just curious, what diode is it? Do you have a link?

Thank you for the links. I'd be curious to know if anyone has tried pushing it and how far it goes.

Thanks for the post and pix. It's always good to see what and how people are building.

Did you use Rick Trent's module as well? I normally just use some thermal compound on the sides(gotta be careful to not get any on the front of the diode at all) and rear of the diode. The rear portion of the module butts up to the rear of the diode, so that provides plenty of heat transfer and keeps the diode from going anywhere.

I also use wire on these hosts to provide the contact between the host and heatsink. This is one of my favorite hosts. Awesome seeing it in green! I might have to do a green one myself.

Edit: I just saw that the thread you linked to was mine, so you obviously know I use wire. Lol. I even had a few that had no play between the host and heatsink, but they still needed the wire to make connection.

Yeaaa, my diode still had like 0.5mm of play judging on it rattled about when I shook it. Oh yea, and thank you for your thread. I might not have figured it out for another day without you +rep

Interesting ways of solving issues. I didn't know a 500mW 520nm existed. +REP
