520nm Vs. 532nm

let me first start off by saying this isnt really meant to be a full review- this is mainly to show the color difference between 532nm and 520nm. it really amazes me how such a small increment can make such a visible difference!

A little while back, i bought a 520nm diode from DTR. I had seen the 510nm build by RHD a while back, and the idea of a new color of green interested me- although i was sure i couldnt get anything for an affordable price. that was, until the 520's came along. Pictures i saw made it seem a more 'true" green sort of thing, rather than the yellowish green of 532nm (at least, this is how my eyes see these two wavelengths).

heres the first picture- just the host with a semi-ok beam shot.

to get past the issue of beam splash-which my camera unfortunately picked up all of- i just slightly unfocused the shot. this actually helped in two ways- 1) it didnt get all the beam splash (mostly due to dirty lenses), and 2) it helped show the color difference a little better.

this is just another one-i think this is when the battery in my 520 started dying (gee battery, what nice timing you have. jerk.) However, this does show what 520 really looks like, kind of more minty-green. i think its a lurvely color!

so all in all, 520nm is a wonderful color, not half bad, and nice power. not too little, but since its green, a little goes a long way. this one is around 80~100 mW if i remember correctly (great memory, eh? its just that sometimes i forget my....umm...what?). A lot of people just want power power power, regardless of wavelength, divergence, beam spot, or beam quality. i really like having two different green wl's in my possession-but i want MOOOOORE! :D i would really like a 561nm and 556nm at some point- but man, that sure is a lot of dough. but one can hope!

561nm is a near-impossible color to take a picture of though... and its quite an ugly color ;)

Nice pics by the way!

superb color comparison. I'd think a 556nm would be the most visible wavelength, mW to mW. I can't wait to get a 520, love the color. I gotta get a yellow first though

well unless you get a 555nm laser the 556 is your best option ;)

Definitely go for a high powered 589, they are sometimes multilines :D

I didn't know 555nm lasers existed, I'll take 5W please, gonna signal me some martians:tinfoil: wait, this assumes they have equivilant sight to us:thinking:

I did know our peak sensitivity was 555nm

Very cool, I love the color it reminds me of a hillside!

I was thinking this might be a nice DIY project for myself since the pre-built lasers can get very expensive and diodes are generally much cheaper... perhaps when/if I start building lasers one of these will cross my path :D

That's 12 nm. That is a lot :na:
Did you measure your laser's wavelength? It might be different by several nm.

well...its small compared to everything else in the world! and no i didnt measure the wavelength, i do not have a spectrometer.

It is amazing that those green laser diodes from the same batch might have distinguish colors, though the difference is really only several nm. I can not say the same about red or blue lasers :whistle:
