50mW green laser is very dim or not on at all

Guys,

Since summer 2008 I have two DX green 50mW lasers one pot modded and one 'true' 50mW. Until last summer they worked without problems although sometimes they got sometimes dimmer but after using longer they worked again normally.

Now after 3 months of non usage they did not function anymore I replaced the batteries and saw a dim green light and then wednt off. I tried both alkalines and charged NiMHs (2xAAA) same problem.
The ambient temperature was 17-18oC, colder than previous times.
A third one purchased in Jan 2010 does not have these issues and works normally.

Do these devices age even when not in use ?

You should allow "warm up time" of about two minutes of ON time, green lasers are very susceptible to ambient temperature changes due to very delicate optical crystals.

Also, try fresh Alkalines, not NiMHs.

The warm up time is needed. When it's cold my greenie takes either a substantial warm-up time or heating in my hands to reach full power.

Have the lasers been bumped/dropped/shocked at all? It's possible the lasing crystals may have been misaligned if they were.

Also, Eudaimonium, he did state he tried alkalines.

My S-KY 150 needs to be preheated to 36 Deg C before it puts out rated power. It will also work good for a short time at 17 Deg C. Go figure.

Oh yeah
My bad.

In any case, there are a lot of possibilities just to give the answer right now.

We need more input from the OP.

OK the green lasers are not used for months, now batteries replaced, and no bumps or other shocks happened. they stayed just in the drawers.

Hmm, only possible reason I can think of is, that they are from Deal Extreme after all and it's indeed possible they are so low quality that they die off in a month or two.

If you are looking for some great lasers , go to O-like.com:

Warmly reccomended by couple of members here, there was also a review but I can't find it :
Silver chrome green laser 50mW/good finish [OLSGL50] - $29.00 : Welcome to O-Like.com, Your source for laser products

They only cost a little more than DX junk, put pay off incredibly.

I out it on the central heating radiator (30oC) and then it worked.
Is this really a temperature issue ?

BTW the O-like are they really better ?
Prices are not that bad does not differ much from DX.

O-like stands high reputation here.
For the price, quality is unbeatable.

However, for top-notch products you should try LaserGlow, Dragonlasers, or any other CNI reseller.

But since those prices are quite high, O-like is the way to go.

partylighter,

My DX greens generally do not emit *AT ALL* unless I hold them in my hand or place them on the windowsill in the sun for a while. During the winter, in my (rather uninsulated and cold) closet, they'll almost never emit any 532 right off the bat.

So yes, temperature does matter with these. The "good thing" about the DX greens I have is that after they -do- warm up, they're very overspec. They were all bought as 5mW units; two do around 50mW... One's an absolute freak and does *90mW*. After warmup of course.
