5000mw green laser? Is this site for real?

I apologize for acting like an ignorant ass. I (and many others) should act more kindly to others and help them as they have helped us. Although we got off on the wrong foot, i hope we can look past that and have a fresh beginning. The last thing i am going to say in this debate is that lasers are somewhat of a toy because they bring us pleasure but in higher powers they are are very dangerous and should not be treated as a mere toy. Have a good one mate

Whats with the pic as well hahahaha

I was gonna post this until i thought i should not be an ass anymore

nice. we should have a new thread: laser presidents.

if i may, i will harp on a little more about measuring power.
i think it feasable to make a small bomb calorimeter to measure the joules of a laser over a period of seconds. similar to the famous burning peanut experiment from school class. once we have the joules we cant extrapolate the watts. also giving the MEAN power and disregarding anomalous warmup times and peak powers.
im digging out a digi thermometer and trying it. shall report.
suggest maybe a black body immersed in water, or black ink in a test tube.
there will be losses from reflection at the surface, as with a lpm. this can be accounted for if a kind soul with an lpm can recreate the experiment and post results. standard 20ml test tube is important to keep thermal losses the same. i will be tweaking.
thoughts?
with all these huge claims by the cheap end of the market and so few customers in possesion of an lpm even a primitive measuring device should be a useful BS detector to warn or tip others of scams or bargains.
wouldnt we be gutted if they really were 5w and they sold out while we all argued about it?

BurnaPeanut

thats a link by the way

also infrared thermometers can be had for 10 bucks now, removing the need for the tthermal mass of a contact probe, and liquid.

now thinking about a 100mg aliminium sheet insulated on all sides exept the measurement and laser apatures, one each side. sprayed black.

Do post this in the Laser Measurements Section if and when you get it done. A bomb calorimeter's not bad... but from my school days I remember it was horrendously inaccurate.

Also, it'll only be able to measure several watt lasers. I guess it might be sufficient to check on these 5W and 10W laser scams, but we already know they reek of scam anyway.

Interesting experiment though. As with every DIY LPM, the main problem is to get the calibration. I've been searching and thinking of ways to do calibration with cheap parts (like a resistor set with a fixed current outlined at the bottom of this thread). If anyone finds an accurate, precise, and consistent way to do such a calibration, accurate DIY LPMs will be commonplace (and that is my goal. I hope to be able to bring that to the community one day).

That's a good idea! Please post the results, although they will be pretty inaccurate it will give us a small idea of how much power this thing has.

yes i feel the same way. im not looking for huge accuracy in the milliwatt range. only the hardcore want to know if a beam is 5mw or 10. i dont imagine most care. if light is anything like radio it takes a doubling of power before a change is noticed so we use decibels instead. for example transmiting from europe to usa using 1 watt is not perceived by the listener as much quieter than me sending 2w... 20w not much louder than 10.. 50w a little louder than 20.
when we get near the 1 watt power in a laser its putting out real heat so it wont be too hard to tell if we get 100mw or 1w, 1w or 2w. its these claims that need to be checked. im off to the shed...back later with a machine.

Btw, if you're thinking about IR measurements of lasers, this thread might get you some headway. The person who started it is no longer around, but it's still worth looking through the entire thing since there's lots of information there.

I know the jest of this thread is ridiculous advertising on the part of (mostly) chinese wholesalers. However, if we look at the broader picture it's cheap chinese production that's keeping prices down to the point we can afford them, and the chinese are just responding to demand. I mean, what really is the lesser of the evils if you think about it. X-laser tries to claim the FDA's Laser Gestapo will arrest you if you dare not buy their product, so the BS goes many different ways.

Lasers are mostly a business issue on my front. Knowledge of laser pointer assembly and diode behavior learned from these forums helps me make money with crowd displays, and I just got a nice bonus for doing so.

totally correct, the chinese have access to a massive array of hardware, combined with low health and safety requirements and low pay. they have a true free market economy. who would have thought the communists would get there first?
they will make cheaper higher power products while they sell, to a point of saturation. if its fair to say that a 5w diode exists then it will be put in a crap ali tube and sold on alibaba sooner or later..
also, if a 1 watt diode in a tiny maglite housing works, just wait till they get a surplus lot of 6 D cell police maglite bodys to play with and shove a 100w bar pumped yag in it.
expect ALL your international post to be opened by the government in future.:gun:

Just guessing here, but the price of a 5000mW green laser would be.....

i just joined this hoping to find some good info. but im disgusted at just about everyone here saying childish things... except drsplastic. im leaving. u guys go ahead and keep ruining this site. man, what is it with internet forums bringing out the worst in people so quickly? The Bible is so true, John Chapter one is right on. People are in darkness. Mans pride is gross. so evident here and on most other forums. some of you will hate that i brought up the Bible, but have a read first before going off ;) Life is short. Become born again and live forever. wow, now there is a topic worth typing about
