Bought one of these recently on fleabay, i think most of you will probably have heard of the seller, and straight away i know you're all looking at the link and screaming in horror! Yes I know, I was mugged probably! But - he makes two statements - "guaranteed 300mW unmodified", and "new 2008 model now contains IR filter". So surely if it hasn't a filter, or isn't 300mW, i've got them on an incorrect description dispute haven't i? I did collect personally from him and he metered it in front of me, it showed 331mW. So far i've ascertained the following, on fresh energizer lithiums -

Matches and red balloons - yes, close-up instantly, and about 12ins away takes a sec or two. Doesn't seem to work terribly well any further away than that.
Black balloon at 2 metres - yes, but takes a while.
I've fired the laser through my Barr & Stroud military 532nm goggles and looked at the result with my phone camera, can't see any IR as far as i can tell. Maybe not a reliable test though.

Any comments/thoughts would be helpful!

I bought one like that was a scam they said 75mW more like 10mW but i did get my money back.

Black balloon at 2 meters takes a while? That does not sound like 331mW.You probably got scammed, get it retested.Btw, unmodified does NOT mean that the diode isn't insanely overdriven. ::) Anyway, his meter was probably rigged....

That is not putting out anywhere near 300mW, sorry. That is your typical spymodex type laser you got there.

By any chance did he show you that 331mW reading with a Lasercheck? if so, a little bit of IR from the laser tricks the sensor and causes the power reading to shoot up much higher than it really is.

No, it was a... can't remember, thorlabs or something, it's on the listing i linked to. Oh and it draws 420mA, which seems a little low to me for the 300mW claimed!

It quotes a 60sec on - 10sec off duty cycle. Which i can believe, as if i hold it on for more than a min it starts getting warm!

Anyway, what of this "new model with IR filter" quote of his? Cos if it hasn't i'll have him straight away on description!! ?

You can test for IR by using some undeveloped negative picture strip and a digital camera and shining the laser beam through the pic strip onto a wall and view the wall with the camera and a purple or white light is IR.

God guys, am I really still doing this? This is THE shane-dominic. "THE ORIGINAL" scam IR laser. If you ever hear any notion of scam greens and IR spewers etc it all started because of this eBay seller and his Spymode site. This is the original laser scam, and he's still at it - apparently it still works because no matter how many times I repeat myself, people still buy from him. Oh well....

Well if i can prove this is chucking out IR i can do him thru paypal under the "not as described" option, as he states they are now filtered.

I thought of that, that's why i took along my 50mW NewWish, and that showed 48.2mW. So i can only assume a portion of the 330mW was IR, even though he said it was filtered.

Does anyone know how to disassemble these spymodex type units? Doesn't look as easy as the NewWish type that just pull out from the front.

Ok i've dug out some small IR filters i had, so i've done a little experiment, have a look and see what you conclude?
