i just got a 20mW off of Amazon.com for about $25 including shipping, w/o shipping about $13. my question is would it be worth the money to risk a pot mod or should i buy a more powerful laser that already has the power to say, light matches, etc. and if so what strength would it be?

Don't even attempt the mod. The pot mod probably won't work because the crystals are most likely saturated, and you might break the laser in the process of opening it. Your basically stuck to buying a better laser, for a high quality burning green laser try novalasers.com, they aren't cheap but they are very nice. I recommend getting at least the X100.

The x100 is from Novalasers.... basically what is being said is if you want a decent powered laser, true to it's specs, you have to buy from a reputable company. I cannot say that I know of any reputable companies that sell through amazon......

If you want a cheap burning laser then you could get the DX200 red ( Dilda ) it's focusable so it's great for burning, I've got one, and it burns nearly everything ! Matches, Tape, Wood, Plastic you name it !
