200mW DIY green labby with 1000mW pump

Taking another stab at a high power labby. I started with a 9mm 1000mW pump and some DX parts. I made two units to test my machining ability and see if all the extra effort was worth it. You all know the DX 35 532nm; it comes with a 500mW pump and can put out, up to 100mW. Well on one I switched out the crystals and the pump, and the other I machined all the brass and replaced the same components. For the driver I used the DX 7135 x 4 @ 1400ma, the one shown in the picture is the 750ma (7135x3) threw it in for mock up. With this setup im getting aprox. 200mW of green, at 15 ft the beam is unbearable to the skin, and pops red balloons instantly on contact ;D. In comparison to the unmachined unit, there seems to be a 60mW difference, so the extra work was well worth it.

I receded the board into the heatsink not only for a clean look, but there is some heat issues with this driver. After mounting it with some thermal pads, the heat is no longer an issue :)

These parts were pretty rough and needed to have the mating points trued up, it seems the OEM uses epoxy to fill in their mistakes. I forgot to take befor pics for this >:(

This is the new diode, 9mm 1000mW badass. For this application I removed the can (as always) to get it nice and snug with the medium.

The diode was a little too big and protruded about 1mm out. Needless to say adjustments had to be made on both units.

I also noticed a very interesting thing in regard to IR. While tuning and getting things right, I decided to see how the IR leakage looked with no filter in place. Well I found some scary stuff, with a 0 LUX Sony nightshot cam and a 532nm filter in front of the laser; the IR can be seen 30ft away in the form of a 4in dot! Im not sure which IR this is, but im guessing the 1064. While the IR may diverge at a different rate, it is still present at the end of the beam. I am going to repeat the same test, but in addition to the 532nm filter im going to also place an 808nm filter in the path of the beam and see if this IR spotlight is still on the wall.

How do you go about removing your cans? There was a post a few days ago someone is buying a canopener which seems pretty cool, just couldn't justify it myself for the few diodes I have.
 
I usually use snips, the 9mm diodes are not as difficult because of their size. For the 5.6mm I am working on a tool based on a pipe cutter. The canopener you speak of is essentially a modified pipe cutter / pliers. Any way you do it, its risky business, but very effective ;)

any pics of this famous can opener? maybe i could make one myself for way less than the $150 I hear they cost.
 
wow nice laser! It looks like your getting really good at making greens lol =P
 
I havent finished it yet, but will post the pics when done. I started with a hobby type tube cutter for brass. I have to machine the rollers to hold the diode, and a rest to support the can while the wheel cuts it. Lucky for me, ive got a nice practice graveyard :-?

Unfortunately I learn with my eyes and hands. Booklearnin was never my strong point :-/ Needless to say it has been an expensive journey.
