1st laser 1mW class 2 in australia

Hello this is my first laser that i want to buy and i know nothing about it, i've just been reading all the safety threads etc. and i wanted to know some things.

I want a green 1mW laser that is class 2 or 1

Firstly i live in Australia, do you think it will get seized by customs?

The laws say you can't have it in public, what if i don't use it unless i have to? Can i say its for personal safety? like when lost or getting threatened?

Am i allowed to use it in my home? Like shine it outside from my house?

Do i need goggles?

Will it damage my eye in anyway? Like look at beam, dot? (obviously i know if it get your eye and mirror etc.)

What is IR filter?

Where is a good place to buy them? eBay seems to be bad since they sell 5'ers as 1'ers.

Do 1mW go like 1KM? Is it bright? Can see beam easy at night?

Maybe. It's hard to know.

If it's truely <1mW then you can use it for SOS signals when hiking/camping. If you use it to stop someone threatening you then you will be arrested... or get the sh@t kicked out of you.

You can use it for star pointing (again if it's truly <1mW) if it not in a flight path.

<1mW won't but chances are any cheap green laser you buy will be overspec. Anywhere up to 50mW And that will damage your eyes and you will need goggles for it.

eekBay is a bad idea. Try some more reputable laser companies( search this forum for them)

Green lasers are brighter by comparison to other lasers of the same powers because our eyes pick up that wavelength better. 1mW won't go 1km. It will diverge long before that and will be a very large dot (depending on the quality of the laser)

@iamscared - It's hard to tell the true output of a eekBay laser. Better to buy through a reputable seller and know for certain what you're going to get.

Well, I watched 2-3 episodes of it... not my choice... and wanted to poke my eyes out.

Then a new show came out recently... being of a russian background, I had to watch it...

Russian Dolls.

Made me want to puke.

If customs do sieze the laser (and they've wised up to the particular popular companies that sell them), you will get a very nasty letter from them which is kind of a slap and dont do it again or else letter.

The penalties are pretty severe too, I think last I read its a gaol term and a huge fine.

you can however import laser components, like I have to build my 1 watter, but pointers are a big no no.

Companies on the customs scrutinize list include but are not limited to: Deal Extreme, Wicked Lasers, Rayfoss, etc. Also anything with "torch", "Flashlight", "light pen", or "laser" will probably be checked. My last order (a diode from dave) was opened by customs for inspection. I knew as it was re sealed with a customs eblazoned tape that read "package inspected by australian customs" or something similar.

I was just this ' ' close to having a 500mw green pointer when the ban came into effect. I promptly cancelled the order and got some other stuff from Deal Extreme with the refund. (Some torches, a rc helicopter and some hand held radios).

I really need help getting a max 5mW green laser, can someone show me link? It can't be over 5 because i don't wanna damage eyes.

Welcome to the forum. Search is good but don't let it get you down a lot of people here forget we were all new at one time.

Also you could try to contact swimsurfer on the forums he sells a lot of green lasers and has a power meter he may have a true 5mw around.

Hi i am considering to buy from either Rayfoss or Price Angels but i want to know if they are Class IIIA, both a described as <5mW and PA says its IIIA while RF doesn't specify. Also Ledshoppe

Does anyone know if they are really IIIA and TRUE 5mw?
