Dear people at LPF,

After spending many hours in reading stuff on this forum i finaly decided to register. First time i came here was after found out that times had changed since last time i was searching stuff about lasers. They have became cheaper, alot, especially the ones from china. After some reading here it became clear to me that getting a Dilda from DX was the way to go as a beginner. So there i went, spended 60 bucks on a laser, some battarys and a charger. The laser is amazing for burning, pointing, basicly everything. But as many of you probably noticed with lasers, once youre into it, you want more than one...

So i started reading some more.  This time my intrest went out to a green laser, still while being on a budget I went looking for a laser not much over 100$ but still having good power. After reading many good experiences with o-like modules I took a look on Susie's site. I noticed that the 120 - 150 mw module was for sale for 105 $ dollar, this seemed like a good deal to me. I also saw a ready-made, laserpointer putting out 120mw + For only 3 dollars more. Since im not a  good DIYer yet I asked Susie if it used the same module as the ones that get sold seperatly, and she said yes they are. I orderd the laser and 2 weeks later i recieved it.

The laser itself was intact, i recieved it in some bubble wrap, just like with the Dilda from DX, when i first lighted it up i was amazed, much more visable  than the Dilda but i noticed the lens was dirty. And yes its using the same type of module you can buy separately by judging the lens Using a cotton tip i tryed to clean it, but its verry hard to do and nearly impossible to totaly clean the module.
With some fresh batterys (using panasonic's Oxyride battary's having a 1.7v initial charge) it will hurt your skin, burn tape, pop balloons, light matches so basicly the whole shabang. But after some usage it wont anymore. Iam suspecting this is because the laser needs a little bit more than the 2.5 - 3v the 2 AAA battery's are giving. I know from reading the forum that o-like modules work the best with a voltage around 3.6v.

Now, after the wall of text, here come the questions  :)

Ive orderd some 3.6v AAA sized battery's from DX, With using a spacer i hope to increase the voltage and hoping to make this laser live to his full potential. Do you guys recon this is a good idea? I know the pointer has a crap heatsink so i will keep the duty cycle short.

Also the lens is dirty.  And after cleaning it still is I dont know if this is because the lens is made out of plastic and that there is nothing to do about it. Anyone knows this?. I'm very tempted to take a tube cutter and cut the tip off so i can clean it properly. I could cut it in a good way so that with some tape i can put the tip back on if i wanted to. What do you guys recon? Its just an Ebay stile pointer btw. Nothing fancy. I know i could really screw up the host with this but if it doesn't work out ill try to extract the module and try to buy an o-like host from one  of the forum members here.  What do you guys recon?

Thanks in advance and i hope you guys are willing to answer my questions,

Sonic.

Before you go about modifying or messing around with your module, I have a few suggestions. In respect to cleaning the lens, i suggest you buy a "lens pen". These are cleaning pens that are used to clean most camera lenses and whatnot, http://www.lenspen.com/

As for the power issue, you can buy several different kinds of batteries, most of the time you'll need only one battery and that would do the job just fine. Depending on the type of host you use, i would suggest: one 10440, one cr123A (lithium rechargeable), or an 18650 battery. The operating voltage is supposed to be 3V for Susie's modules (o-like). So 3.6-3.7 should be alright, don't go too far with increasing voltage, you could risk blowing something in the module such as the IR diode, driver...etc.

Hi sonicfury,
The reason they've gotten a lot cheeper from those place is that they are built with alot cheaper components, thus not built to last and they over-drive them as well.
Appying more voltage won't help, it'll just put it out of it's misery so to to speak.
I wouldn't do or modify anything until you check to see if it's still in it's warranty period and if it is, send it back for repair. If it's not still under warranty and it does output at some level, I would just use it normally, putting more voltgae to it will just kill all that much sooner.

The lenspen looks good indeed. Ive seen it before, in a youtube vid i think.. i doubt the it can even touch module without removing the top tough.

As for the battery's. Yes ive orderd a set of 10440's I forgot to mention the model nubers in my first post, sorry. I got those and a charger from DX. My plan is to use one at a time + a spacer. I might mod the case to only fit one later on if it works out.

yea, one with a spacer works fine, i had that working in a couple of green leadlights i had. When it comes to spacers, i built a great spacer for mine with just aluminum foil and electrical tape ;)

Wrap aluminum foil into a cylinder very tightly to the right length, then make up for the lack of width with electrical tape.

I know Jack, voltage isnt the way to go... Atleast not always. The laser does what it does and is up to spec with new battery's. Its way more stable, more accurate and its just the little bit extra it needs to fully come to life. With older battery's it just work 100%, i know i could sent it back but i doubt ill get a much better diode. In the end it would only cost me more than i wanted. I also think it has to do with the type of battery's. When i use one CR2 3v Rechargable battery from my dilda the laser works perfect. I just think the AAA voltage gets below 3v too quick and that they dont give a reliable powerfeed for this laser.

..what is the max voltate of a 3v battery' max 3.6 v charged... but... the minimum voltage? 2.75 is the minimun for the 3.6/3.7 battery...i only know this

however......you have a doog laser. maybe you are right. the diode needs more volt. i don't think that an higher voltage can break the laser. with fresh battery you have 3.4 volt. so... with a 3.6 volt charged at 4.2...to be sure.. you could bring the voltage to 4 volt.....using a bit the battery in a flashlight. and when it is at 4 volt.. you can use it :)
4 v - 3.4v= 0.6 volt of difference. a LITTLE and safe difference.... this is in my opinion ::)
