100mW NDG4216 515nm Laser Diode

Here is a great new diode. 100mW 515nm Nichia single mode diode. It is a tough little guy. It can take a lot more abuse than the Osram green diodes. These look good for 130mW-150mW. Here is a power test done with the G-2 lens.

I guess this is one of the reasons for my wallet always being empty...

Definitely going to pick one up some time. Do you know whether this diode stays at ~515nm or whether it goes up higher in wavelength the more current you feed it?
 
Awesome, thanks Jordan! Can't wait for spectro testing, I'll definitely be using these in the wood hosts I'll be making.
 
Of course right after i buy a 30$+ pl515... i guess it could be worse.
 
I wouldn't feel too bad Joey. Both of mine are set for just over 100mW at about the same milliamps/Voltage that this one tracks at. Unless mine were flukes the GB ones are very robust too. 100+ mW from a rated 30mW diode is impressive and I did take them up to 360 or 380mA if I remember right and they survived and also one had a strong blue shift as well that stayed even at high output.
It's always nice to have choices and it appears this new diode gives a no worries wide range of easy set 100mW+ to play with. Have you seen any examples of blue shifted ones yet J? Don't know if you ever looked at the GB thread where I took some measurements and pics.

That green.... I like it. You should get some 5mw diodes for starters. Shipping from Chinese ebay sellers aren't that good. The only guy in the US that sells diodes that low would be aixiz. However no rush with this new diode :). Just a suggestion.
 
If I buy 1 with the driver you have set @ 200ma and with the acrylic lens what will be the output? 63-70mw or is that with a glass G2, with acrylic won't they be more like 50mw, I didn't see if the output readings were with a glass or acrylic lens?

Yea testing was with a G-2 and acrylic will be about 15% back of that.

Sure.


This one looks very good. Wonder if they survive long at 500mA.

Not sure and also not sure how their wavelength shift is at higher temps.

Here is a great comparison a member of PL made on the NDG4216 vs the PLP520-B1.:beer:

So I took some measurements for the new Nichia NDG4216 (100mW single mode 515nm) yesterday in comparison with the Osram PLP520-B1 (120mW multi-mode 520nm) and thought I'd share my findings.

The NDG4216 has a nearly identical beam profile to the PLP520 when corrected with the G-2 lenses that DTR sells. At 86 feet, I measured the NDG4216 at 12.5mm x 5mm with the PLP520-B1 at 13.5mm x 5mm. There was a tiny bit less noise surrounding the NDG4216, but I've seen variations from lens to lens that could easily account for that. Beam at aperture was the same 1.5mm x 4.5mm for both.

I can't tell any difference in color between 515nm and 520nm, but 532nm is obviously more yellow as we all know.

My experience with the PLP520-B1 has been less than great when pushing them beyond their stated limits, so a potentially more resilient alternative is most welcome. I've damaged 6 of the PLP520s thus far including one today.

I haven't pushed the NDG4216, but I easily got it to 150mw and stable with the G2 lens and plan to leave it there to see how it holds up under normal use.

DTR is selling the new Nichia NDG4216 for 20% less than the PLP520-B1, so baring any future bad experiences with the NDG4216, I'll start pairing these for 300mW of single mode green. In fact, the only downside I see with the NDG4216 so far is that its a 3.8mm as opposed to the 5.6mm. I find my aging eyes and clumsy monkey fingers challenged when soldering the tiny leads coming off these 3.8mm diodes.

Just my $0.02 . .
