I think get the 1st one. it has 900lm, the second is only 250lm

And why exactly is this in General section of LASER pointer forums?
Candlepowerforums deal with flashlights and that sort of thing.

BTW, Yeah, first one, P7 emitter is among most powerful LED emitters today,
However it is made of 4 individual LED dies, so getting a good throw will be impossible.
Flood however, leaves car headlights bite the dust.
Been there, done that.

P7 will make your skin feel hot when pointed on it. Seriously - at 2.5 A driver LED, one would expect no less.

I think I'm qualified to give an accurate opinion on this.

I would would get the second one. the 501b is my favorite light, and for its size its bright enough. I measured it with an R2 bulb, and it max'd at 220 lumens.

The first one has a P7 LED in it!!!! That might sound good, but if you look at the bin code of the LED is P7-CSXO. Meaning its a C bin, witch is two year old technology. And does NOT output 900 lumens. More like 550lm. And the P7 produces a lot of heat, so much that the flashlight's small host cant handle it or disperse the heat properly. Even if it could it would heat up the flashlight and make the whole thing hot.

Also the batteries life is realistically 15-20 min. In the specs, it claims 90 min. how is that possible if the 501b w/ R2 claims 40min???

I would get the second one. It has been with me the past year, and has not failed me once. The only con is the threads need to be lubricated. Also the new ones aren't shiney and dont have a lathed looking finish like in teh picture. They are painted and have a matte black finish.

If you want something brighter, go with something physically bigger and takes higher capacity batteries.

You can get throw if you have a larger reflector. In fact you can get rediculous throw with a single P7 if you have a deep reflector on a Maglite. In this aplication on a small lens you would get crazy flood. By using any multi-emitter LED with a aspherical lens wont work.

Dude, you rock the flashlight worlds.

I never dealt with anything there, except one P7 build from a friend. Damn thing was so bright that I dropped my jaw.

But was heating up properly.

Anyhow, with p7 emitter in your avatar, you sure are qualified to give opinions on this! :D
