Hello all,

Since Ehgemus seems to have dropped off the face of the earth and since ive gotten nowhere days after asking some what happened to him, im forced to talk about this deal we had, where I asked if I could pay him a commission to build a lightsaber

Seen here which he helped build.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c__TcJAge6Y

I am looking to commission someone to build a device similar to this one, for which I will pay you for the parts and your time with undo haste, please private message me so we can discuss this further.

Thank you in advance.

this lightsaber is for extreme self defense only, and I really intended to go through with this and all the risks associated. : /

I doubt anyone is going to help you if it's for "self defence". A laser isn't a good choice for self defence anyway, you'd be better of with pepper spray, a taser or a firearm. Hell, even a punch knife would be better as a last resort.

Yeaa lasers really aren't the way to go for personal "self defense" weapons, though if you're set on this being a novelty project then I'd recommend doing some design work and then look at a machining/fabrication company such as Xometry.

Ehgemus left the forums quite a while ago and is no longer offering any of his machining services here on LPF. I don't think he even comes online anymore. :undecided:

Agreed - good suggestion.

And yes, last online in March I think... :(

I really disagree that a 7 watt after seeing what it can do ''isnt'' good for self defence in a dire situation, and anyways, that's only part of why I was going to buy this.

You need to directly hit not one, but two, <10mm spots spaced several inches apart. Easy to do if someone is standing still - but in the middle of a struggle or some such with adrenaline flowing and everything that goes along with a fight. Good luck with that - if your attacker has a knife you're already dead. Not to mention in a dark environment you'd also flash blind yourself in the process, unless you plan on putting on safety glasses first?

Using a taser, firearm, knife or pepper spray your effective target area suddenly got a whole lot larger. Just pulling out one of those may be enough to save you without using it.

Of course with goggles. not every situation is the same however. most aren't even prepared for pepper spray, or anything versus their bare fists no matter how tall or bulky they are.

So someone is coming to attack you and you're going to stand there and tell them what? "Please wait until I put my laser safety glasses on and prepare for your attack!".

OK then ...

..That might be what some do.

That's not what I would do.

This is not a good idea. If you need to blind someone at long range, use a can of raid. Otherwise, use pepper spray, or a taser, or a gun! Using a laser for self-defense is an extremely terrible idea. :)

So then, why not just use pepper spray? In an event like this, it's much more effective than a laser, it not only temporarily "blinds" the subject but also gives them intense burning, bad enough to disable them. Good luck managing to hit both the subject's eyes in a completely open and adrenaline-filled situation, and can't forget the safety goggles. Not to mention what diachi pointed out, the 4-6mm dot of a laser versus the range of pepper spray (Maybe a foot or two wide? That stuff really does spray).

It's not really justified to be able to use a laser as a weapon as it's not designed to be one and has very little advantages over other solutions.

No one said it would be generally used like a loaded shotgun in a five year olds hands, and yet still the reason I posted this was to see if anyone cared about money, or was able to build one of these.

Also - being blinded by a laser will not cause pain. There are no pain receptors in your retina - so while it may prevent an attacker from seeing you, it will not prevent him from attacking further. There are much more effective ways to stop a dangerous person!

Im not going to repeat myself. if you want to refuse to see what ive said which the content of has been reasonable beyond a doubt, by all means. but believe it or not some know when and when not to use weapons, and if anyone can build this, I will pay you for the parts and time you put into it.

People can build these and people do care about money. We're just pointing out that if you did have it made it wouldn't be suitable for your stated use. I pointed out that, with that use in mind there may be little interest in helping you make such a laser.

Also - being blinded by a laser will not cause pain. There are no pain receptors in your retina - so while it may prevent an attacker from seeing you, it will not prevent him from attacking further. There are much more effective ways to stop a dangerous person!

If anything the laser is just going to make the attacker more angry. That or induce a laughing fit...

My stated use is generally used at minimum if only for merely having it, where it will stay in the home. ive heard what you've said, and that's nothing to do with why im here to cause people death or damage.

If anyone can build this, I will gladly commission you.
