I think the things goes like this:

You dont know: affraid
You start to know: you are not affraid
And when you really have the knowledge in and out: you start to worry again

I go on my rants to her about a build or project i'm working on and she just stares blankly at me. I know she could care less, but i get so excited about new ideas that i have to share them with someone right that second!

She definitely wasn't amused when I got a box with 80 flashlights in it......however she isn't complaining about the the extra 240 AAA batteries we have in our kitchen drawer now

I suppose there are quite a few hobbies that attrackt mostly men. One example would be electronics in general, where risk/danger isn't really that much of a factor, but women remain scarse. It would seem logical if few women construct electronic devices, there would also be few that construct dangerous ones. Same thing goes for playing with RC cars, planes and such.

It seems to be changing though, looking at the number of women that enter university for beta sciences. Math and physics seem to have a (shrinking) male majority here, but for chemistry its already 50/50, and biology has a female majority by now. I'm not sure if choice in education will also affect choice in hobbies, but it would seem plausible - also because of meeting fellow studends and simply being exposed to their hobbies.

Like you say, at least in my experience, I don't remember any speech about lasers, electronics or RC helicopters betwen me and a woman technically speaking. Even when I was a student. I think you are right. :cryyy:

Dont make mistake, I know they exist... but I don't know anyone.

I think all of the smart chemists that are women end up working with beauty products... or some stupid "age defying" money making miracle.

Most of the girls i know LOVE them. They ask me to bring them when we get together.

I find people calm down and lose a lot of the fear when you explain to them its really no more powerful than a magnifying glass out a sunny day.
If you think about it, it really is pretty similar, its just the laser has more range.
