Why do I gotta fall off the damn laser train so often...

I like this community. A lot. So I don't know why I end up back burnering the laser hobby when life gets "meh". This is probably my 4th dang reapproach. So, here I am again, re-noobing yet again.

Any of the old timers or new-folks-in-the-know have a good place to look for a quick rundown of what's gone on since about.. February? Yeah, it's my bad for dropping off the face of the earth again. I just heard mostly about more import restrictions due to aircraft-lasering (which, flying planes, you'd think I'd be for, but I'm not.)

And my usual guilty pleasure hey: ..... are there any new wavelengths available? c_c

sorry guys... I also missed a bunch of PMs that I thought would be sent to my email but didn't.

Anyways. (salutes) from this laser enthusiast and pilot... and let's see if this time sticks again, because I still love me some squirtin' photons.

Thanks, really gonna try this time... This is different than the 480/476nm nichia diode I'm guessing, (Good! Moar wavelengths = good!!) but - where to get? :p Will search because I don't wanna be that guy, but, any leads would help :)

DTR has them in stock this time. Probably only has 3 or so left... and these appear to be binned "high wavelength, low efficiency" 9mm diodes.

Highest known operating current: 2.4A (wavelength not yet determined)
Highest known wavelength: 466nm @ 2A.

Will do between 1.8W and 2.6W, depending on current.

Heh, just as you replied I found DTR's thread. Will PM him asap. :) Thank you though, and, good to see some folks still here... and good to see there is still new stuff coming through...

Aye, no problem. I'll probably run mine at the highest current I can. Why not have a ~2W 470?

Welcome back.
You missed
CNI has stopped shipping laser pointers over 5mW into the US
and the 462nM diodes.

You missed me Getting a broken 100mW lab 593.5nm labby finding the problem and smoking the driver trying to fix it :cryyy:. ( long story short it had bad psu under the Driver and I swapped it but hooked part of it up wrong smoking it with reverse current :cryyy: :cryyy: :cryyy: )
the good news is I am about to hopefully buy a lesever driver to run it. although i dont think i posted about this here I did on PL

And today I am adding to my sig a green HeNe. :san:

Edit: and I hosted a laser meet and am hosting another one this weekend.

Hello again!

I was just in your neck of the woods a couple weeks ago, when that supercell went through Denver.

I don't have much to say laser-wise though - I'm probably farther behind then you...

Yeah, the CNI thing -- I saw signs of that late last year, and it bothers me... I know there was some option of certain companies installing ND filters and shipping in, but a lot of people complained about that... (...I don't know why. But the perfect is the enemy of the good.)

Upsets me if only for one reason: if any of my CNI units fail, it's going to be impossible to get them fixed. I kinda wish I went labby, but right now I guess they're more precious than before :|
Really, a handful of idiots have kinda ruined this for us in a way. Because they 'thought it would be a good idea at the time" to shine lasers at things and people.

I'm asking DTR about one of the 462 diodes; we'll see. I did manage to get a 476 diode a few months back so that's decent consolation if I cant. :p But I hope I can.

Laserman - please do tell us if you get that 593.5 working! I have a 50mW labby 593.5; does about 60mW ... it's real nice - but so far I haven't heard of *anyone* fixing a yellow dpss.

As far as the supercell coming through Denver -- Yes, I was out at the time, and it completely nailed my car with hail... Sirens going off, swirling clouds, that was scary.. glad you made it through.

And good to hear from both of you, and know you're both still around. :)

:)

I had a 30mW i sold to Lazeerer and he replaced the pump diode and realigned the crystal and got it working.

so i sent mine to to him to look at. The good news is the heads fine and when I smoked the driver I had it hooked to a dummy load so thank god.

Unfortunately the driver is a lost cause I smoked it pretty good. and even after replacing a bunch of parts it was still dead.

CNI wants $900 for the driver. so Lets hope lasever has better prices.

this driver is only $160 DPSS Laser,Green laser,Blue lasers,Red lasers form Lasever
But only drives one TEC so it wont work.

so lets hope this one is cheaper. DPSS Laser,Green laser,Blue lasers,Red lasers form Lasever

You'd be surprised how many different alignments lazereer did. Some really crazy things. He'd probably be capable of repairs out of everybody... problem is how often he disappears

Welcome back again!
I've missed seeing the sweetest looking sig on LPF!
With your history here, you won't be doing re-noobing for long.

Holy crap, so much has changed and happened since Feb! Amazing things are happening in
the world of laser diodes. The price on the 1W green diodes keeps coming down. The
3.5W NDB7A75 it has been discovered is capable of 6W and its price continues to slowly
decrease as well. Unfortunately, DTR is non longer able to offer the LAZ-650-C, so there is a
gaping wide hole opening up in the red end of the spectrum.

There are also some interesting things happening with the lower power diodes as well,
particularly the reds. Oclaro has released a new multimode 638nm diode that has much less
splash than the Mitsubishis, although it can't be pushed quite as far as the P73, and it is a
little more expensive. Opnext has some other 638nm diodes that are single mode.
Something we thought we would never see for a decent price

There is also now a 16X 405nm diode that hits over 1W when pushed, found in the BDR-209
drives. It is a completely different diode to lazeerer's violet and nobody knows what it actually
is yet.

So there are some really amazing things going on in the diode scene. All of the above are
available on DTR's site, of course.
