Good luck with that one my friend. I got to say, I wouldn't have the balls. Let me know how it turns out...

Over the last 4 years I have taken 7 15# battling robots on planes before (carry on). There are no tsa reg's against them, same goes with lasers (to the best of my knowledge) just be prepared to a.explain what it is b.be respectful to the tsa officials.
The robot's got throughly bomb swabbed, they even let us (my robot team) check them out under x-ray. (wouldn't let us take pictures of the x-ray though :( )

Thinking about the fusion as i am writing this. It would look bomb like under an x-ray. If you MUST take it I would remove the batteries.

i wouldnt do it hah. last time through an airport i was hassled endlessly and ended up risking missing my flight + arrest because i refused to let them confiscate a brass ornament hanging on my backpack.

they look for an excuse to seem succesful or something, or they just think my greek name associates me with the taliban, either way, facepalm.

I'm worried toncheck it cuz I might crack the dichroic mirror in the plane so I'm gonna put it in my carryon with no batteries
It should just look like a hunk of non electronic metal

If you put it in your carry-on, and it goes through the x-ray machine, won't all the circuitry show up? I'm sure they would question that.

I don't have a white fusion build (wish I did!!) I'm just saying, personally, if I had one I wouldn't risk getting it taken away. If you do decide to try it, let us know what happens, I'm really curious.

IMO, if they see something, they'll open it up. I'd just put lots of "supporting" technical gear with it. Documentation (even if not really useful) on lasers, light frequencies, optics, multimeter, tools etc.

You just need to give the TSA goons "context" for what they're seeing on the x-ray. A bunch of screwdrivers pliers, and a soldering iron would probably defuse any alarm on their part quickly.

Just have it (without any battery, ofcourse, also no batteries around it) in the hand baggage, and when you arrive at the desk, ask the officer something similar to "sorry, i have a prototype of a multicolor laser for show machine that i have to carry with me, can you please check it and certify that is not dangerous to carry on the airplane ?"

I think asking first, instead just wait that they find it in the baggage, make them less suspicious ..... and the fact that you say clearly that is a prototype, take care about the "hand-made-bomb" appearence that it can have under x-rays ..... and also saying that is a part for a laser show machine, must clarify that is not a pointer (ok, ok, you SAY that :p), ..... at least, if you find an officer intelligent enough .....

I have never had a problem flying with my RGB projector on passanger air lines, Well except one, Placed the RGB in the check on luggage and end up crushed by the luggage handlers, I now allways take my RGB as a carry on and have had no problems at all at any of the airpots TSA checks. Only the laptop, you have to seperate out and indevidulize, open laptop up for inspection. If you do put your projector in the check in luggage be shure you check it's condition with in 24 hours so you can make an insurance claim if need against the are lines. after 24 hours, they do not except any claims on dameged items, I found that out the hard way, having to fix my RGB's damaged case and optics and even the 650nm module. all got destroyed by the luggage handlers from cramming the luggage into the transports, I did not help even though I marked the luggage (all over it) " fragle laser equipment inside (glass)".Carry on is the only way to go!

Once when I went on a trip they looked at my old Pentax film camera and asked me to take a picture to prove it worked or something. Thing is I don't see how that would prove anything as it's not like we could process the film right there!

Maybe they would want you to demonstrate it, to prove it is what you say?

In November I had to fly to New Mexico, took 2 Fluke meters, some tools and some electrical parts (reed switches,rectifier,24v transformer and infrared sesors) as carry on,
I almost missed my flight. They checked everything, even my clamp on work light.

The airlines have no control of what you take on, it is TSA and they can be a pain in the ass! I got everything except the complimentry cavity search!

Put it in your checked luggage not carry on! If you take that as carry on, you have a good chance of getting it confiscated.
