Hey guys I'm a noob when it comes to gas lasers. What is the best supplier of argon lasers? What should I look for when it comes to tube lasers? What gasses make what colors?

Thanx

By best do you mean highest quality? Coherent is probably the best supplier of argon lasers. It is also the most pricey.

Realistically, we all use eBay. A new 50mW argon laser is 10-20 grand. A [highlight]used[/highlight] 50mW argon laser is $100-500.

Argon: sky-Blue
Helium Neon: red
Carbon Dioxide: Infrared

There are plenty others, but they're not really hobbyist material.

In my opinion Ar[sup]-[/sup] lasers are the most interesting compared to HeNe and CO[sub]2[/sub]. Ar[sup]-[/sup] lasers are just stunning.

That's just because you have not seen an orange Hene in person.   ;)

While I'm here, what current does the PSU for that HeNe you have for sale draw ? I might be interested in it if it's current draw is within the capabilities of the power supplies I have.

Also is there anyway to get it out of that metal tube ?

-Adam

EDIT: I bet the argons lasing lines still look nicer than an orange HeNe anyway :p

was playing with the argon there, it makes GITD materials glow :)

The HeNe I have for sale comes with a PSU that takes 12V. The current input isn't designated, but I have run it with my smaller 12V power supply which only puts out 2A. If you want to we can work out a compromise to replace that PSU with one of the other PSU's I have for sale. They will work off of 220 mains.

The only way I know of to get it out of the metal housing is to cut the housing off. I use a Dremel with a cutting disc to slice the entire side open and then spread the housing enough to slide the tube out.

Argon and HeNe = both good -- just different

Peace,
dave
