What is open can?

Sorry if this has been asked like a million times before but I have heard of this on various topics but havn't found a topic that explains it.

What exactly is an open can diode and what, if any, are the benefits compared to an ordinary diode?
Can ordinary diodes be turned into open cans?

A regular diode has a metal casing over the fragile components. An Open Can does not, and while it is much more delicate, it can be pushed to higher powers because it can be cooled more easily.

I see.
So could you very carefully cut off the can of a regular diode to make it an open can one, thus making it easier to cool?

the open can diode from 18x , 20x ,22x DVD Burner /LPC-815 sled
they come open can no need to cut
cut the diode can are very hard

yeah, cutting a regular diode to make it open can sounds impossibly hard. just go to the Buy/Sale/Trade or Group Buy section of the forum and get a LPC815 sled.

It's not hard to turn a canned diode into a open can.  I just did it with one of my 808nm diodes.  I just took needlenosed pliers and squeezed the can a bit all the way around until the entire thing looked shrunken.  Part of the can was now detatched from the base due to the careful crushing.  Then I carefully just pulled the diode base away as I gripped the can with the pliers, ripping the rest of it.  No damage whatsoever, and a nice open-can 808.
