I am a noob when it comes to building lasers--I've never built one before. I have two blue lasers from Blord (a 1.5W and 2.5W) and a green one from dealextreme. I want to build one on my own for once, and I was trying to extract a diode from the DVD drive of an old, broken laptop of mine. The laptop was made in 2006. It's a Toshiba and I am not sure of any of the specs regarding the DVD drive I got.

Anyways, I never saw any objects inside of the DVD drive that looked anything similar to a laser diode I've seen before. I know a DVD player has two lasers--a red and an infared--so I was looking for two objects that look similar. I recovered these two things, and I'm wondering if they are laser diodes, and if they are, what kind are they? Can they be integrated into a handheld laser?

Thanks for any help

hi Yes it's IR or a flat package red, You can play with it from a PSU, But not worth to build with it. DVD BLU RAY burners might be your answer to salvage some thing.
