I went to DisneyLand in the late 70's and was amazed with the hologram when I rode through the haunted house. Of what I remember it would be just as fascinating to see it today. That green ghost had his arm around me:eek: I won't begin to ask what setup that was:)
When you view a gas laser beam doe's the beam stop absorb the dot splash for nice viewing or is it a the quality of the laser itself?

Although I don't have any gassers, (space constraints, money) I can completely understand why people do - for the same reason as a hobby lightbulb collector I lust after early electric lighting technologies like carbon filament and medium pressure mercury lamps (which btw are gorgeous, and anyone who appreciates a gas laser would be sure to appreciate an early mercury lamp). It's nostalgia and appreciation for the evolution of the tech, and like light bulbs to LED counterparts, gas lasers still perform better in some areas, like beam spec?

Though I haven't been, I've seen documentaries of the place and of what you speak, and they are not holograms. They are an optical illusion based on a toy that makes a penny appear to float above a plastic base. Disney Land's illusions were made prior to the first hologram made with a laser. Dennis Gabor made a rudimentary hologram with polarized sodium light, but it had no depth to it.

You could only see the ghost image when you passed by a mirror as I remember, cause my first reaction was to look behind me and I couldn't see any "ghost"!

Yeah, a true hologram would be seen through a film of the fringe patterns embedded in the film of the object wave. Disney used a well known optical illusion to create their effect.

I have one Hene and shes a 612nm mells giret totally orange like a sunkist can. I can't wait for 620 some nm dioides to be cheaper in maybe a few years. I'd love to see that wl.

its fun to close the shutter and experiment with only letting a little light out.

Since it's only 2mw I out googles on and I can see blue glow in it.

Disneyland likes to use what called "Pepper's Ghost" illusions.
Those types of illusions are actually pretty popular for people that like to go all out for Halloween.

Is "Pepper's Ghost" the chosen image? I remember it was green and had a little evil laugh more Disney like than really scary.

I'd love a 594 or 604 or whatever the yellowish wavelength is. Be a good day when that happens!!

594 is the yellow HeNe. I have been looking on eBay for one. But they are rare to find.

I've heard that too. They are still fairly new and not inexpensive, though. There are all sort of holographic technology that I will never be able to do. I'd love to do portrait holography, but need a very short pulsed ruby laser to do that. Some of the newer solid state lasers are great for doing full color holography, but the optics involved are very special and extremely expensive to use. I'll just plod along with my monochromatic reflection holograms.

The Compass series and other SLM DPSS lasers do come up for good prices every now and then - I had one a good few years back. Can't remember the exact price but I must have been a good deal because I was 16 and didn't have much spare cash then (Still don't! :p).

Beam specs on those are just as impressive, if not better than a lot gas lasers. Tightest beam I've ever seen. :D

That said ... I'd still go with gas too.
