By the time I get round to doing it, I probably won't post on this forum. But, I'll find a way of getting this done.

I UNDERSTAND that adding a laser to every project sounds cool. I DO! But there's a point where that ideology collides with using "the right tool for the right job." A problem well stated is a problem half solved. You need to take a step back. What is your problem? You need to prevent customers from going past a point. How in Rod's name did you go from that to "LAZOR TIEM NAO!!"? It's not practical.

Hanging on design ideas without flexibility only leads to frustration as you'll find out sooner or later. Take our advice. Learn. Rethink your solution.

I'd understand that if he had undeveloped sense of humor and wanted a laser to cut people in half.

But he is stating visible warning-sign laser beam and , initially , Class I.

Kind of contradictory, everything else aside.

Oh and, mister Cyparagon, teh meny lulz for your post. Plus reputation for that.

Warning signs or Safety devices using Lasers are being
developed as we speak...

A 1 Minute Google search netted me this Eud...
Have you seen this....

Self-Powered Safety Laser for Cyclists | EnviroGadget

or this....

Bike-light that paints a laser-lit bike-lane on the road around you - Boing Boing

I don't want to discuss the Pros and Cons of the devices..
I just wanted to show that Laser Signs/Warnings could/can
be a reality...:yh:

Only managed to actually open first one, crappy internet.

Looks half-a$$ed if you ask me. Car's headlight are very bright and for that to be visible, power needed is going to result in what, 20 seconds runtime on batteries? If it's powered by dynamo, if you get it to that kind of power to be visible you are already speeding past the damned car anyway :D

Hah, just had to get that off my chest. Dunno, neither of those appear to say "Can't go past this point, or else nothing will happen" like OP wants it to be.

And I am quite a lot for introducing lasers and it's technology to the traffic safety measures. But not in that way. Laser-measured distance vs speed and calculate probabilty of accident, automatic speed reduction and that sort of thing. I'm for that. Not actually lasing people to get them to notice you. Far-lights are bad enough as they are I think.

Seeing a laser on a surface vs. seeing a laser beam in the air are VERY different things. I provide laser solutions for a living, and I'm telling you that what you are asking for is impossible unless you want to have a fog machine running in your store. I'm not trying to be discouraging, but you should stop wasting your time looking for a "safe" laser for use in public which produces a visible beam inside a lit room. If it was possible I would sell you one (this is my job, after all) so I'm quite serious when I say that this is not possible.

If you want to project a line on the floor that is a different story. For a product suitable for this type of marking (which is a common application in industrial environments) see this webpage: Laserglow Technologies - Handheld Lasers, Alignment Lasers and Lab / OEM Lasers

Getting a visible red beam even in the dangerously high power levels is very difficult, red light is both significantly less sensitive in our visual spectrum and far less effected by Rayleigh Scattering which helps make the lower wavelengths much more visible.

A truly <5mW green pointer (ie. NOT the one listed as 5mW on eBay or Chinese sites) is very visible in low light and almost entirely eye safe, a quick reflection or glance wont really harm much as long as you don't stare into it. I suggest one from AtlasNova (abeland1 on ebay) with "APC". These will not exceed 5mW and are very safe for recreational use without needing glasses.

Of course you should always try to use them responsibly, never point them at someone intentionally, don't look directly into them. Always treat a laser of any power as if it were a loaded gun and you'll build proper safe handling habits for any power level.

Most people find these lasers to be overspec actually. They are cheap and not very reliable but if you only have 5 bucks they cant be beat! I have 2 445nm but these little greens were what perked my curiosity!

Back on topic the idea is nifty but not going to work in daylight. If you happened to own a Spencers gifts or god awful holister type clothes shop where the lights are always awkwardly dim and full of throat choking cologne droplets a 5mW green would probably be visible.

If not print out a sign or buy an industrial strength laser and purchase one hell of an insurance policy for all the children you will be blinding.
