That's not too far from Layton. About 40 min drive. We might have to get together and hang out a bit, or else perhaps I can send this host up your way via mail. As it's part of my halloween costume it will have to wait till at least next week of course.

It's not that far, I can come down to Layton. It'll get me out of the house. Just let me know when and where, I'll be gone the rest of the week for my daughters birthday.

Ah, when I said "power output" I meant more along the lines of "fry anything it points at" then a specific mw. I don't own a LPM. Like most here it's on my wish list. However I should be able to check the current draw easy enough. I'll try it with a fresh charge. It's case negative on the setup, so to measure current I would simply place the multimeter between the negative battery side and the host with the tailcap off. Right? (assuming my finger is pulling the trigger when I do this)

Optical output may be different but if the Microboosts are setup in the same way, the current draw should be similar. Bearing in mind I was wrong about how I'd set mine! They're not at 800mA but 900mA each! D'oh... The readings will be different but will still be good to know.

Yes, the way you describe the test sounds just right. Essentially you are just inserting the multi-meter into the circuit in series with eveything else.

Many thanks, I appreciate it and will check back to see.

EDIT: ok I am an idiot. I figured out how to actually USE the radioshack multimeter. It's showing 3.9 amps being drawn. The battery is halfway discharged. I forgot to put it in my charger today.

Thanks. That's useful info for folks to log away. I've found that with my setup some batteries can cope and some can't and the behaviour of the laser differs depending on what's going on. It seems that protected batteries may give a brief flash as the protection circuit sees a short and shuts down; some give a couple of seconds then the voltage sags to a point that both drivers go into shutdown; some can't put out enough current and one of the drivers shuts down giving half power!

There are a whole lot of weird things happening with my parallel setup!

Anyway, thanks for doing that test... And at least you figured out how to use your DMM!

For a steam punk host i got some interesting ones.

Now what that is, is a normal host that i put into a sand blaster. It gives the metal a very cool look.
Almost like a old rough and tumble finish. I can do this to any metal host. on monday i hope to have more and better pics but to give you an idea.
