With a telecast service of this evening, in consequence of brainless guys used to point lasers to the face of soccer players during games, and to point lasers to airliners (more than ten aicrafts have been recently obliged to repeat the landing procedure due to laser beams entering in the cockpit), Italian Government has decided to prohibit import/selling and ownership of lasers exceeding 5mW (the only allowed exception are qualified research Laboratories).

"Outlaw" laser will be sequestrated and the owners will be obliged to pay a fine of 400 Euros (about 570 US$, at the actual change). A big quantity of lasers have been already sequestrated. One of the Customers in charge to perform the controls, interviewed by a reporter during the transmission, has declared that these lasers are mainly coming from China.

Due to such decision, it is obvious to think that packages shipped by UPS and similar carriers will be subjected to inspection; so, be careful.

You say "prohibit importing/selling" does this mean that 'owning/possesion' will be legal?

Doubt it. I heard they banned katanas in England, but those who already possessed them were allowed to keep them. Imaging withdrawing all laser pointers from the population of the entire country.

Wow, that sucks big time.

What on earth would someone drive to shine a laser into a mans face? Even worse, a soccer player? Such people should have payed for a brain surgery, not a laser.

I am gratefull for the fact that in Croatia, lasers are mostly unknown subject.
However people will start to buy them, and do stupid things. So I guess I am better off preparing for hearing: Lasers are banned in Croatia

Does such laws imply on buying parts for lasers, or only lasers as whole finished products?

I have forgotten the word "ownership", thank you to have underlined it. I'll upgrade my first thread.

Sorry to hear this FrancoRob. It is only a matter of time before an all EU ban is in order. :gun:

If in the future you need help getting your hands on a laser, I will be more than happy to drive to Trieste with the package to hand it to you. Though I am not sure as to your whereabouts in Italy, so my offer might be meaningless, still stands though.

Personally, without having read the exact text of the decision, and/or awaiting for an ordinance/law clarifying this topic, I think only lasers as a whole finished product.

In addition, just to clarify some doubts, as lasers are not registered, the fact that an owner can continue to play with them without problems is obviously a consequence of how he uses them (common goodsense!) If a guy goes around shining the laser beam everywere, I suppose that he increases the possibilities to be "grasped".....; for sure nobody will enter in your house to inspect for lasers, if you are not seen by witnesses while shining a beam toward other people or toward an aircraft, and also in this case police must be ordered by a law-court....

Oh my god, I never could have imagined I would have to go somewhere far away, planned ahead travel, to do some skypointing...

That is one nightmare that is gonna haunt me through the night :(

"OMFG look at this fog! It is as dense as milk... I wish I could get my hands on those idiots pointing lasers at airplanes!"

Katanas as other long cold steels (intended as weapons and not for ornamental purposes) must be declared and registered near the police-headquarters, here in Italy, exactly like a fire-arm. And to buy one of them you need to obtain a licence. In this case you are really CONTROLLED.

...maybe Maroni, who is the Secretary of State for the Home Dept......., in case the law will be discussed in Parliament....

Sheesh, this sucks balls man!

All thanks to a bunch of wankers who think it's pretty funny to shine people in the face. I think it won't be that long until higher powered lasers are banned in the whole EU, like "brtaman" already said. I hope there's a way around it and seperate laser-parts are still legal, so we can use DIY kits if necessary...

I heard the news: please correct me if I'm wrong, but apparently, the ban is limited to the highest-power GREEN lasers. The newscast I heard specifically mentioned green.

Well, it has been a newscast of 5 - 7 minutes, they spoke of green lasers while speaking with a man that had an eye injured, and referring to soccer players; but they said also "lasers exceeding 5mW".....

For me, this means that they spoke about a "known" object, and this doesn't mean that a high power laser can be allowed only due to a different wavelength; in that newscast they have shown to ignore that lasers with other colors exist....they didn't say: "other colors are allowed"....

BTW, my target has been to make aware of these news more members as possible, just to be careful about shipping possible inspections and general handling....; we'll see if some more detailed info will be mentioned/available in the future.
