I don't want to burn anything, i just want to point.
I have a 10-20mW green and a 30mW (advertised) 650nm that are bright enough and fun to play with.

i recently got an advertised 50mW 405nm, that i find not enough bright, even on white paper.
In general are real 50mW violet lasers fun to play with ? (without goggles)

yes that's what i wanted to know:
if they are safe, they are dim, and if they are bright enough, they are dangerous ?

That´s just wrong.

EVERY laser above 5mW is dangerous. Even under 5mW it´s dangerous, especially for children or for (drunken) people with a less good reaction.

10.000mW of IR (808nm f.e.) is less bright than 5mW of green or 50mW of 405nm. Is it less dangerous?

Anymore questions?
You get good goggles at laser2go.com

i know that different wavelengths have different brightness.
I was asking specifically for 405nm.

"Even under 5mW it´s dangerous"
I was speaking of normal use with normal people :)

Define normal......

Bottom line safety rule.............

If you use ANY Laser over 5mW you SHOULD be using
appropriate Laser Safety Goggles/Glasses...

You don't need to convince us with excuses why you
wouldn't need them...... You do !!!

I have read in sam's laser FAQ that a moron who stare directly into the beam of an <5mw keychain for 1 minute kept no sequels.
So we can assume that 650nm 5mW is totally safe.
Personally i put the no-goggles-limit at 50mW (please don't discuss this)

So my question is: at 40mW (real) is a 405nm laser fun to play with? In another words can you see clearly the dot at that wall that is 4 meters (12 feets) away (in daylight/artificial light) ?

You can see it. It will appear blur, and you will have some after-image even though it doesn't seem bright. So it is not fun to watch (and I do not recommend without goggles) unless you have fluorescing or GITD stuff around your house.

The most beautiful thing I've seen done with a 405 is a spyrograph on a GITD sheet of paper. That is definitely worth a try.
