Well, if it wasnt apparent from my avatar, I also love motocross (MX). Came across this from last weekends pro race and unfortunately it involves a laser.

MX Sports Hands Out Penalties for Laser Incident at Washougal - Features - Vital MX

Stupid move on Jeff's part and Ryan is very lucky he didnt get some sort of eye damage. As we all know cheap lasers are almost always over spec and from the looks of the photo it was a cheap 532nm laser

Ill keep everyone posted on the unfolding of this event since it just happened last weekend

Well the Alessi family is not the best. Tony (the father) is a HUGE D-BAG and pushed both his sons (Mike and Jeff) into racing. He was what racers call a "mini dad" and lived his dreams through his children. Along the way yelled at them and pushed them too hard. Anyways Mike turned out to be a good rider overall and Jeff, eh not so much but he is still great compared to everyone else. There has been controversy surrounding this family in the past and "cheating" via illegal engine mods and what not but to stoop to this level is amazing! Ryan Villopoto (the rider the laser was shone at) is unstoppable as of lately and to try and blind him just so Jeff's brother Mike could try and get a holeshot is a D-Bag move!

I hope that Tony and Mike get hit harder along with Jeff. Glad to see Jeff can no longer get a pro license but he needs to be fined heavily and mike needs more than $15k in fines. His team will pocket that no problem. Complete BS and I happened to stumble upon this being talked about on an old forum i used to frequent called thumper talk and those guys are idiots when it comes to laser as well. i made a post to help straighten out the facts as they relate to lasers so we will see how that goes over

Had a feeling Team Alessi was pretty weak. And the whole "mini dad" thing is sad. Hopefully there will be severe penalties and that your post on Thumper Talk is heeded.

unfortunately most of the people over there basically laughed at my posts and think they have enough "knowledge" of lasers to know and assess that 'RV was in no danger at all and it was just a childish prank' that and the comments of 'holy crap lasers can light 2x4 on fire! where can i get one' or 'i need to buy one and shine it in (insert rider) face so (their favorite rider) can win. i kindly let them know that doing such thing is a felony and that Jeff could be charged with such crime

freakin idiots i tell you

they seem more concerned about pilots and night vision with blue lasers  where did they learn this, Wicked Lasers or somewhere??????

EDIT: OMG YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!!!
Helicopters and planes biggest issue with laser pointing is the interference with the computers on board. Taking the sidepanel off your computer and pointing a laser at it will result badly aswell. Particularly at cd drives and conventional SATA hdds. Directly pointing it anyway

What!? Seems the biggest threat to the hobby is ignorance. I remember when WL first hit the scene, "Real Lightsabers" but what's up with the HDD interference? Where'd that come from

if its really $25k now than that went up since yesterday (was only 15k as of yesterday). its also good that jeff cant get his pro license anymore so that limits Tony's ridiculous actions to only Mike now. I wouldnt care if Mike's team dropped him or if there was a clause in his contract that allowed them to get out. I 100% agree with punishing Mike, Tony and Jeff especially since Jeff did it to try and help Mike out.

People on the MX forum are up in arms about them punishing Mike when it was Jeff who had the laser. I completely gave up all hope on that community, they are a bunch of smart guys when it comes to fixing a dirtbike but freakin morons when it comes to common sense and laser knowledge. Had a guy from AUS try and argue with me. complete idiot; said that AUS customs are worst than US customs (dont agree on that) but then next sentence said its so impossible to get lasers through AUS customs that its not even worth buying a laser since they seize them in bulk (again dont agree on that). How many AUS members here have easily gotten lasers in their country.....hmmmmmm. he also thinks that if a laser slips past customs and gets delivered, then a cop will be at your house within the next few days. oh and apparently lasers are illegal no matter what power they are and no one can own them ever. best run out and tell all the astronomers and laser eye surgeons to stop using their lasers and destroy them.

side note; another guy thinks lasers are only able to burn material. i pointed out that they can cut or burn materials and posted a video of lasers cutting electrical tape since thats all i thought of at the time. technically it melts the tape but by doing so it cuts it, correct. also there are a few members here who own laser CNC type devices. those would cut plastic and not burn them, right? this could just be a difference in opinion on the definition of cutting but im pretty sure we as a laser community can agree that lasers have the ability to burn, cut, etch, torch, etc....

not only will i keep you updated on the laser case but if i see something really worthy ill post the dumb things they say
