Turn your 5mw laser into 100mw. Has anyone tried this?

pod mods rarely work.

If I lived on Tattooine I'd totally mod my pod

it works decent. I went from 20mw to 73mw. Not quite 100 but not bad. As far as life I'll let everyone know through updates. This was a 4$ greenie off ebay so not a big ordeal.

makes me wonder if this same concept would work on 200mw or larger lasers. Essentially turning a 400mw into a 1W or greater.... obviously with time being the only unknown issue. But luckily its a laser I am experimenting on here, not a human body with a new drug!

btw - posing human body drug experimenting as a non analagous extreme to laser pot modding – are you sure you aren’t already actively engaged in self-administered testing of new drugs?

Yea, I think the fact I am a trauma surgeon resident I use medical analogies for everything :) In any case, I just got into lasers and I did this "pot mod" on 1 of the 5$ cheapies from ebay and went from ~19.8mw to ~73.1mw. Like I stated, I have no idea how long it will last for. Nor do I care. It was fun to do! I'll report back once it dies or if it lasts at least a month. I'll try to use it daily here and there until then. Thanks guys!

Woof, my bad big time Doc! [open mouth & insert foot]
But hey if you are any way associated with any new psychiatric experimental drug trials and in need of a volunteer subject for evaluating the potential for therapeutic benefit, then maybe we can work something out in trade for your laser needs

Eh?

You are pretty close to me in OK, I am in KS. What kind of trials are you interested in, there are over 1,000 going on. If you truly want to I can get you the paperwork, many of them pay actually. As far as helping me out with laser needs no biggie!

Okay I was really just kidding (or at least mostly kidding) as I do not at present outwardly exhibit any symptomatic indicators or have any self-perceived sense of loss of reality indicative of a clinical or pathological psychosis, but rather that which is more closely associated with possibly neurotic cognitive dissonance relating to the plural duality coupling with psychosomatic tendencies to which I seem to be inexplicably and invariably drawn toward, versus what I know and cognitively recognize as the rational and logical means to avoid the repetitive obsessive compulsive cycle by which I am most decidedly unable to extricate myself from other than only on periodic occasion and even then for only relative short periods of time, ultimately returning each time to mentally deficient conclusion that I still lack having ample and sufficient Coherent and Focused capacity stockpiled regardless of how many lasers I buy.

Albeit, the potential you mentioned for actually receiving compensation if successfully chosen to enter one or more of a 1000 drug testing trials does sound most intriguing, however for me it would be difficult to impossible to rationalize getting paid to take mind altering drugs as part of a gainful pursuit even though I still remember very well the late 60’s and early 70’s, and Thank God the flashbacks finally stopped.

Now so far as recommendations for a good source of cheap entry level 405nm and 532nm laser pointers please check this thread out if you have not already '$4.35 405nm eBay pen SUPER OVERSPECT Must see!!'‏ - it is readily evident that a nice percentage of these exhibit outputs already up into the 70mW to 80mW range. And for $4.36 you buy a bunch for not much and Pot Mod all you want.

When you start looking for your first serious investment (ready to spend some serious money, that is) just begin keeping a close eye on the Buy, Sell, & Trade forum, the Deals & Discounts forum and especially the PERMANENT THREAD: Ebay& other internet FINDS of interest

Finally when you are ready to trade some of your hard earned cash for a serious laser be sure to read without fail the 6 Steps To Prevent You From Getting Scammed :cryyy:

Now just sit back, relax, read, learn, buy, build, and contribute, where in no time at you will find that you have become a laser pointer addict just like the rest of us. :D

Wow! That's probably one of the better, if not the best, posts I have ever read. You sir are well written. Nice breath of fresh air.... and yes I am working on getting the moderators to okay my buy/sell/trade post so I can begin my adventure into the laser world. Thx

Your question and spyrorocks' choice of images to post is one and the same . . . :shhh:

why is my question so poor? I don't get it? I used the search button and read about 100 posts and no one had talked about the method this guy used. So I asked if anyone had tried it and if not I was going to do it myself and report back for everyone... I was just trying to be nice and keep the interest up in lasers. You can't tell me there aren't people who have 5mw lasers (that they seldom use anymore) because they want something stronger but can't afford it. Well this was an attempt to help them out in a way. I am truly sorry for the post and moderators feel free to delete it. I didn't mean to waste everyone's time who clicked on my thread, sincere apology. Please feel free to trash the thread.

Relax dude, its pretty common around here when someone talks about pot modding their dollar store red laser pointer to become some weapon of mass destruction that it is met with silly posts.

Although in this thread Im surprised there were some very thorough answers given.

Hey, I tried pot modding around 5 lasers and none of them ever worked. Lots of them had the DPSS fail and the diode die with it.
I bought 30mW Flashlight-Style Green Laser (CR123A) - Free Shipping 2 years ago.
It still works today and I pot modded from 30mw to twice as bright (to my eyes) and it could melt tape when focused. It was the only one that worked with that.
If you need a pot mod so bad then try that one :)
Otherwise... Bad idea.
Lasers are like a LED in a sense, You put over the right amount of voltage or current and they are brighter... But they get black soon and they start to stop outputting... Can even light on fire!!
A laser diode is similar to that.
Feel free to make your own circuit for testing more mA on diodes that are overspec.

How I imagine at least a few people who join LPF feel.

So... how did you measure your Laser to an accuracy of 0.1mW
You didn't mention what calibrated Laser Power Meter you used
to measure your Laser...

well it locked on for the longest time at 1.98 and 7.31 and that's obv dependent of the decimal place as I could switch it to read 19.8 or .198 if I wanted.... That's why I put the approximate symbol in front of my numbers as it obviously fluctuate slightly

oh and to answer what I was using it is my roommates laser measuring device. I don't know what it is but it looks almost identical to this one except with red number display and it also has a computer program of some sort.
