Intro
Hi Guys,

I'm Steve from California. I've always had a fascination with lasers. I built two of them before i knew about this forum or that there were other laser people out there.

Laser 1 - I don't know why I count this as a laser. I ripped the diode out of a CD drive and hooked it to a battery. I never did anything more with it because you can't see the beam. I didn't know that then.

Laser 2 - DVD Laser in Axis lens rubberbanded to a pencil with a home built drive circuit I found somewhere.

It's time to come up with a real laser.

Where do you guys suggest I begin? I'm thinking of talking with Jayrob to get a nice Host, then I can get some batteries and some drivers and have fun swapping out diodes.

The Dream:
My dream laser would be something the size of a small flashlight (read: Fits in jayrobs MXDL I've read so much about) with adjustable power output. On lower power it would be a regular pointer on steroids. On high power it could light a campfire by burning a leaf or hair, light a cigerette or cigar, burn plastics, light a match, cut stencils, put marks on wood..etc.

It would be cool to open those hard to open packages that you get at the electronics store with a laser. Just paint the edges black or mark them with a sharpie, and burn away.

Yep.. That's it. Hello Hello!

Hello Mysticle31.
Welcome to LPF. This is a great place to learn about DIY lasers. A good place to start would be the "stickies" at the top of each section.

You can also check out Styropyro's YouTube video. (this was what inspired me to get into DIY lasers... thanks Styro!)

Welcome.

And I don't mean to burst your bubble, but cutting out stencils, opening packages, and lighting camp fires will be impossible with anything under 900mW and very tedious with anything under 1.5W (1500mW).

Hope you enjoy the forum!

Well you could probably light a leaf or some kindling on fire at close range with just 200mw. But the other stuff... not likely
