Default Thoughts on my design

Hello All,

I am an engineer and my goal is to make custom compact laser housings that can support strong diodes (1 watt for now)

Here is a design based on a CR2 battery, let me know your thoughts!?

It will be able to support any diode as long as the driver is small (15 x10mm)

I know there are many custom builders on this forum that already do a great job... but my goal is to design housings made for lasers from the get go.

Let me know your thoughts!? And yes I have done the calculations, the copper and aluminum heat sinks will provide good run times and it can except the standard copper diode housing (11x11.95mm 9mm lens)

I put a lot of thought and work into this puppy!

It is 65x20mm! Keychain

I ask that no one steals my design, as I am hoping to produce it and sell it for an affordable price to forum members; and give several away in exchange for improvements/ reviews. I don't think this would happen, but please respect my intellectual property.

Looks nice. I think you are expecting to much to be able to use 1 Watt diodes in this. A 1 Watt Green for example has about 10 Watts of heat. That is a lot for a small host.

Also, 3 Volts will need a Boost driver. Most of the Boost drivers are only for low power diodes. The Higher power drivers are mostly Buck mode. You will need at least two CR232's. But more likely two Li Ion's.

This would probably be ok for 405nm and 638nm. But still may have heast issues.

Keep up the good work.

Looks really cool, I'd perhaps be interested when you're all done. Have you given any thought into colorways, material or logo for the design?

Actually, this is very close to all done. I plan on making the whole unit silver in color. All the material will be a strong aluminum alloy for heat transfer and lightness, except the copper heat sink which is 16mm in dia and 3mm wall thickness and will be pre pressfitted into the Al. I would like to come up with a way to cut through the aluminum so the copper heat sink shows at certain areas, that would be really cool huh? I actually was not thinking of a logo, but maybe I will.

Rokakku, if you have any color schemes or logo ideas let me know, because I want the forum and individuals to take ownership in this design!

For 1 watt blues heat will be no issue. For inefficient green lasers it will reduce the duty cycle time, but it is a trade off. There are so so many large laser hosts available that can handle everything, but they are very large, this one will slip into a pocket easy!

I've been looking for an excuse to start using Photoshop again. It's been 3/4 years and boy you can see I have lost my touch. But I've managed to sketch up some rough ideas. Feel free to use or disregard.

Imgur: The most awesome images on the Internet

That stripey laser logo at the top isn't mine, I just threw it in because it was my inspiration for the logo at the bottom. You could play around with variants until its unique and your own, I just liked the style. With the logo with the swish and rocket ship maybe you could remove the rocket and make the giant swish the "L" in "Lasers" if you wanted to mess around with the style. I think that would make sense as printing a rocket that small would be impossible. But overall i think a logo may be too cluttered with a pattern so its either one of the other most likely. But I'm not sure how plausible any of these ideas are as I have no experience in manufacturing and printing.

Edit: Actually they're pretty tacky designs

Looking at the design the business end of the 12mm module will screw into the heatsink? Avoiding the grub screw?

There's a color scheme I'd like to see. It's common in other products such as cars. It's color changing pigments. Pigments that change color depending on how these pigments reflect light. See YouTube. Also Alsa corporation mirror chrome paint.... A link to see what I mean. https://youtu.be/NuM8g0l4Rek

Just so you know, I have a soft spot in the heart for these tiny pocket builds. So, if these actually hit the market, I've got some green backs with your name on them.

Oh! It will hit the market... it will be fun to see how much money I loose!

I really like the alien splash design! Thank you for the work on the logos and designs. The color changing pigments would be great too!! Unfortunately, I think the factory can only do full on coats of the standard colors they have. I would like to do some of these specialty paints, but if it cost me $8, then I would of course have to charge around $20 more and I am hoping this can be a very high quality yet affordable build for everyone.

Let me contact the factories I am working with and see what they can do in the paint department

Also, I I have decided that at the top of the laser the slots in the Aluminum will be deep enough that the copper heat sink shows through... I think that would be really neat!

Keep the ideas flowing! I will give the factories a preliminary design today, and hopefully I can have these ready in 1.5 months or so.

Thank you. Right now a full time job is out of the question do to family issues, so I am hoping this can help with some extra cash...

Actually, no worries, members on this forum should feel free to ask for a discount, especially if they can give me some input!

The goal is to make it affordable so no one even thinks they need a discount , but I have not figured out the pricing yet.

Duke, great questions. I am a jack of all trades engineer...

As far as the calculations I am not going to post them here quite yet, because they reveal a few design secrets However, when the unit is produced I will post graphs of run times and temperature

Default Re: Thoughts on my design

What's to calculate. It's a scalable model. There are a few draw backs to the design imo. I'm not concerned about heatsink in or the typical talk. Let me ask you. Do you have any handheld lasers you have built yourself? With the handhelds I have built I set the module depth in the heatsink based on the focus point of the lens. When the focus adjuster is flush and in contact with the heatsink the focus of the beam would be just outside of infinity focus on the diverging side. That way a small counterclockwise adjustment will bring it into proper focus. If the module isn't set deeper below the face of the heatsink, there will be anywhere from 3mm to 5mm of separation and exposed lens barrel. That would allow an undesirable wobble of the lens and focus adjuster piece. DTR had a 22mm heatsink it was version 2. Look that up. The focus adjuster piece was trick. It's not made anymore. But it would compliment your design to do something similar.

Let me kindly assure you that this design isn't anything new and we could potentially help you refine your design if we can see your calculations.

My thoughts - Nice tinkercad models but there isn't really anything substantial to share thoughts on. Looks like just another mini host which we've all seen before. If you had specific goals with it, I.E. - runtime..ect, and you shared your calcs maybe I could provide some feedback of some actual value.
