Is there a laser that can stay on for a longer period?

hello there,
Now that I have destroyed my first 12X S06J, I have been trying to find an answer to my question "What Laser can stay on for longer then 30 seconds". I'm using the laser to cut vinyl but I want it to complete a task before I switch it off? (3 minutes or so)
Is the 12X S06J the correct Laser to do this task? If not, what is an alternative?
It looks like the 12X is powerful enough to do the task. I might be able to go with a less powerful diode, but with a longer on time.
Please advise.
Thanks
Henk

id use a m140 445nm . SO6J dont like abuse at all. the M140 paired with a proper heat sink can go over 3 minutes on

All diodes if not properly heatsinked will die. Just use a better heatsink next time. Maybe even one with active cooling such as a fan or a small water block and radiator set up.

You could use a finned heat sink with a fan and a TEC

A M140-445 would probably be a better choice they are lot tougher.

In any case the correct heat sinking will allow you to do what you are trying to do :D

I did use what I thought a proper heat sink (old large PC CPU cooling heat sink) with a fan.
Could it have been caused by the relay switching it on/off

How well was the module connected to the heatsink? Also what are you using to drive it? Could be poor connection between module and heatsink or the driver killed it.

one picture is worth a thousand words

Lets see the set up please if you want some advice...

esp the heat sink and LD module area.

And close-ups of your connections and your driver

OR

You could use a lab style laser instead of a handheld

Peace,
dave

Well it really depends on the heat sink design.
DPSS lasers (most handheld stuff) creates quite a bit of heat during operation.

TBH , i've always had an idea to incorporate a heat sink with a fan on top like those I use for my RC cars.

But I never got to actually making it, maybe you can try the concept out?
