Are there any cheap expendable diodes for a DDL?

I already have accidently fried two perfectly good SLD1239JL-54 16x diodes by making careless mistakes in my homemade Daedal DDL driver circuit. In order to prevent mistakes on my third attempt, I want to know if there are such things as cheap diodes with similar electrical tolerance thresholds to a SLD1239JL-54 16x that are cheap and no big deal to fry. I want to be able to test my driver circuit with them before I place new SLD1239JL-54 16x on my driver. My driver uses a 3 ohm resistor, a 47uF 35 volt capacitor, uses 5 AAA batteries, and can range in current from 12 mA to 420 mA If there are such things as cheap expendable diodes that work with a Daedal DDL, please be sure to tell me what they are and where can I find them? If possible try to make sure there diodes that I can find in cheap and common electronics, ones that I don't have to order online. But if there is'nt any that are easily found in electronics found in retail stores, I would still be fine with buying them online. I would just prefer for them to be available in cheap retail store electronics. Thanks.

You don't need cheap LDs.... all you need is a Dummy Load made up of
4-6 1N400X diodes and a 1 Ohm resistor.... (4 for red... 6 for Blu-Ray)
You can get all the info on previous threads/posts on the subject...
Just do a search....

You can get "a" laser diode out of any CD/DVD/PS3/compouter disk drive....the list goes on, they will vary from <5mw upward to 200mw plus.

Problem is I am not sure what the end game is here... If you know that your circuit works and you know the top and bottom limits what are these additional LD's going to do for you?

If you know the max ma you need to put through your X16, you can set the driver to that output with a dummy load, then after removing supply and dummy load (and shorting the capacitor if needs be) solder in your new LD.

could a diode out of a dvd reader act as a dummy load?

Sure... until it blows....
The Diode Dummy load will NOT blow as fast/early....

won't a dead diode still work as a test load?
