Hey guys,

I've just received a 50mw 520nm module with driver, but the custom host that I bought from ehgemus won't be here too soon. So my question is, is it possible to just push the positive and negative wires from the module onto the positive and negative sides of an 18650 battery? I'm dying to see the color difference between my 532 and 520nm.

As always, any help is appreciated very much. Thanks!

If you got a module from DTR with a driver already installed you can touch the battery leads to turn it on but if you don't have a heatsink to put the module in while testing I wouldn't have it on for more than a few seconds at most.

Also in dealing with a loose module be very carefull of where it's aiming whenpowering it up and until you know you have it under complete control you and and anyone around you should be wearing safety glasses!

My idea was to tape the module to the side of the battery, and one of the wires to the positive end of the battery. That way I know what direction it's aiming in and only have to connect a wire to the negative end of the battery.

I'll be sure to run it for 5-8 seconds at max and I'll definitely wear safety goggles. Thanks for the advice!

It's working, and the color looks awesome! I just have one more question. How exactly can I focus the dot properly? When I twist the lens as far as I can inside the module, the dot is really big. But when twisting it the other way around doesn't make it any smaller either, or is it that I'm not twisting it far enough?

Its somewhere in the middle. Takes time and practice to get it right. Youll need to do it when its in the host

I've been trying for a while now, but it seems the dot only gets bigger and bigger as soon as I screw it further out. I'll try it again though, maybe I've missed the point.

Edit: I've tried it again, but no matter how far I screw it out, the dot only gets bigger. When I screw the lens into the module as far as I can, I still get a dot that's about 6-8 inches on a wall only 15ft away. Any suggestions?

Yes, I built a laser with that exact same diode module with driver from DTR the PL520. I am guessing you're using a 3 element glass lens? If so then that is the problem, I don't know why but that diode is terrible with a 3 element lens, mine also made a huge dot plus more splash than dot! You need to use an acrylic lens with that one, I assume a G2 or single element would be ok too. I get a nice clean small dot with the acrylic lens.

I actually chose for the Acrylic lens because I knew it would give me a better dot. Yet I can't get it focused properly.

That is strange, does it have a focus ring on it? Take the lens out and take the focus ring off and try again, the acrylic lenses have a shorter lens barrel so you may not be able to screw it in far enough with the focus ring on it.

Oh that sounds like a good idea. Would I be able to screw the focus ring back on as soon as I get a good dot though?

Edit: How would I unscrew the focus ring? It's stuck on it pretty tight it seems.
Edit 2: Nevermind, got it off.
How many edits left? Edit 3: I managed to get a good dot, but I'm not sure how to get the focus ring back on there properly as there isn't much room left to screw it onto the lens.

If that's the problem then I doubt you can put it back on, I don't use the standard focus ring but instead the Survival Laser extended focus ring, and I can screw it on barely enough to stay on so I can keep a lens cap on it but I can't make it tight enough to use it to focus with.

I have several lenses that require the focus adapter to be removed to go in far enough to focus. You can use a flat head screwdriver most of the time to manipulate the lens in and out. Just be careful not to scratch lens with tool, I use a plastic flat head

I'd like to thank each and every one of you for the great help! I managed to get a very nice dot because of you guys. I'll figure out how I'm gonna do the focusing when my host arrives in a couple weeks.

Thanks again!
