Just saw something in the Hackaday.com feed, that might interest you guys:

Some guys in Japan built a system they call "Sticky Light". Basically, it's a laser scanner, using a single photodetector, to look for dark objects, and stick to them. Since there is no imaging involved, tracking can be very fast, and power consumption is very low, with the diode consuming only 0.5mW.

Here's something to work on to upgrade your next laser scanner project :D

Thats interesting... very smart the way that works, there are no cameras or scanners but instead they used a photodetector. But i highly doubt that this could be a scanner since its only half a miliwatt (0.5mW), but i guess it could be modded abit and given a pretty bit upgrade then it might have some use i gues...

Very intersting

I might have used the wrong term, I meant scanner as in 'it scans the surface it is pointed at with a dot, and sticks the dot to stuff', not as in 'made out of a scanner' :)

well, when it paint around the guy's hand, it does seem to be going fast enough to exploit POV, as the line seems continuous to me. It would probably just be a matter of processing power to process the photodetector data fast enough to enable fluid motion.

or... it could be a timed exposure.. but i think if you put that much effort into making it you would probably wanna incorperate a laser x,y scanner anyway..
