Newfoundland here and have only one comment to make. If we did what you and your son did to that intruder, the local RCMP would take us away in chains and lock us up. Furthermore, we would be on national TV in a matter of hours. The RCMP here are well informed on Canadian Laser Law and are not afraid to charge people. I really don't know how they let you guys walk away from doing that. Yes I am Canadian and would never think of blinding someone, let alone try it. In the states people have guns but they are much harder to get in this part of Canada. I , however, am a knife man. Slice em and dice em, no one rides for free !

Good of you to advertise that fact in case any career criminals are reading this, they can move to Newfoundland and have a safer working environment. A knife isn't much of a defense, especially against more than one person.

Ok I see there are some exceptions, but I think you need to be skilled in its use.

I just now watched it, the video goes dark at about 1:17 just after the guy is shot there's only sound. He sure broke through that door easily!

The culture here is laid back, most are farm/rural folks

There is no variation in Canada with defending your property. Canadian criminal law is very strict. The use of the laser in this case as a dazzler is crossing a fine line and would probably constitute assault with a weapon. What happened here would likely end in charges on both sides. Currently the RCMP is recommending lasers be classed as weapons as they are in Australia. You may own one IF you've got a valid reason to, but any use of it offensively/ against a person = a lengthy legal battle with weapons charges or jail time.

This story sounds suspicious to me. Exactly what the laser community doesn't need.
