So you thought Chinese lasers were safe?

Well you do know 99.9% of lasers are made in China right? including the CNI pens. Dragonlasers,NOVALasers,LaserGlow all are Chinese lasers. Try to refrain from using the saying "Chinese" when it comes to lasers.

But yeah, eBay pens are trash. But what can you expect for $6 bucks? they are still good if you want a laser for cheap-as-dirt prices ;)

Exactly, its true China has a lot of fakes. But some of the best quality lasers also are from China.

Alright haha, I have been mentioned this before. I will use the term "eBay" pens from now on Magna

Coherent, Melles Griot, Uniphase, Thor Labs, Laser Power Optics, Siemens, etc. are not manufactured in China.
Also, Nichia has all of its production plants for their InGaN-based laser diodes in Japan (I've checked that on their 2013 catalogue).

I forget where I read this opinion, but I agree with it:

I don't consider that IR leakage makes your green laser substantially less safe when observing with the naked eye. The green light is already dangerous, more so than the IR, because it's be more highly absorbed by the retina and green is (should be) the majority of the total output anyway.

HOWEVER there is one GLARING (literally) thing everyone needs to know - safety goggles don't protect you from IR unless they're specifically rated to do so. The 405/450/540 yellow goggles will pass any IR components as if the goggles were not even there.

Could one pass the beam of a suspect laser through a prism (preferably with the beam properly oriented at Brewster's angle ;) ), and then find and meter-measure the visible versus the IR component? Might be a good way to build a comparison library for all the different lasers out there.

The Greenlander, about the Android phone not picking up infrared light - it was done with lot of processing. lgCamera app from Google play is my main app (for customized imagjng CCD settings and image post processing), and I can pick up infrared light on my RAZR M.

Also, BTW, Radio Shack green laser is a Chinese laser pointer, but is actually verified safe (checked with Kinect plugged to my PC - no sign of IR laser).
