so what holds the future?

So what can we expect to se happening in the next future of handheld lasers? Let's contain this to the next two or three years. Will we see rising Miliwatts in Blue? Green? Exponential progress in any sort of way, progress at all? ? Honestly, I haven't got a clue. Maybe some of you can make educated guesses. Or, the hell with educated... any guesses welcome.

Multi diodes. But I think the laws will change before anything else. Hope not but it's too common to see plane reports.... Law enforcement reports.... Etc

I think there will be a fall in handhelds and a rise in labbies, because of changing laws.

Well... I think new diodes will be produced at higher power/efficiency, but what i'm really hoping for is new wavelengths!

what i would love to see in my lifetime...tunable diode. spanning the whole visible spectrum, or close. I honestly don't know if it is even theoretically possible, but dang, that would be quite a site to see :)

More realistically, i imagine the 476nm and 488nm diodes from Nichia will be affordable within a few years. that, and i am darn convinced that within the next 5-10 years max, 473nm DPSS (handhelds, labbies, whatnot) will be as cheap as 532 is now. Remember, when 532 came out, it was more or less on the same price level as 473's now, and i have noticed a steady decline in price of 473's.

plus, i can guarantee you that companies like Nichia, Osram, etc. are working on diodes that we know nothing about. and who knows, maybe Sorra will continue trying to develop a direct yellow diode? correct me if I'm wrong here, but i believe they ended that project.

Technology is always advancing, there's much too look forward to :)

I may be wrong but i think they are going to come out with newer, better and more efficient ways to do this process for those who know what im talking about: 808-->1064-->532

if by better you mean crystals that wont melt as easily at high powers, with better efficiency, then that'd be great. but who is "they"?

Good question. I suppose those who "Do" those sort of things are "They". if there weren't any demand for 532nm lasers then why do we have them? And i don't necessarily mean better crystals, i mean possibly a 532 Diode, no crystals. We got close with the "PL520"

I believe a direct diode yellow may be next. Also a multi color diode. One must remember that multidiodes are technically possible. 532 has VERY low demand from what I'm aware

OOO that would be cool, a Direct Diode yellow. not sure how they would to a multi color though.

i wish i understood what determined the wavelength output of a laser diode...obviously, it has to do with the laser chip :p
I finally figured out how the diodes actually produce light-kind of. i mostly get it. a little bit. i think? anyway, what would change the color? composition of the laser chip? thats the only thing i can think of.

I thought i read somewhere not too long ago that direct 532's had been made? i don't remember who by, but i thought they were pretty weak and either really expensive or unstable as all get out. Higher power 520's are coming though, so that will be cool :)
link: yea...can't find it :cryyy: ticks me off, i saw the post not more than 3 hours ago, now i can find it to save my life. haha, anyway, the datasheet says 120mW, so you can expect powers greater than that, seeing as how my current "50mW" diode is running at 110mW.

if someone finds the thread, please post a link here.

yeah good point we have a 520 nm diode but not 532nm did IQs drop around the world of course there should be a 532 nm diode ,what do they use a 520nm for, there's only millions of 532nm pointers around seems good enough reason to have a diode instead of DPSS which is a pain and prone to issues.

Same thing I imagine that determines the wavelength of any laser. It has to do with the material itself and the emission lines it produces. Some lines will lase while others will not.

why would they dump lots of money into producing a 532 diode, when 532 DPSS can be made so easily and cheaply?

to make them reliable, not prone to temperature changes, flaky, drop one and crystal goes out of alignment and its had it just as a start .Real reason i/we want one is just having a pill to solder in lot easier and much higher power ones would eventually be around ..without having to sell a body part to afford a 2.5 watt green ...should cost same as 2.5 watt blue when its developed we can hope.

How great would that be. A tri diode 532. 9w of green would need a super cooling system but would look great for three sec before your eyes explode.
