Signs of a damaged diode?

Hey everyone,
I'm working on my first laser build and I won't know if I accidentally killed my diode with too much heat until my driver gets in. (I have little confidence in myself )
My question is, are there any observable signs of a damaged diode before turning it on?

Thank you,
Alessandro

If you did not use a driver did you use a lab power supply?

Sorry, what I meant is heat from soldering on the leads. I haven't turned it on yet.

I'm just wondering if there is a way to see if it's dead before I work on it more.

how long did you keep the iron there?

Not more than a second at a time, although I didn't allow more than 30 seconds for cooling between.

The leads didn't bend or shift as they would on a melting component.

Thank you!
I'll have to post my pics when it's finally get the driver and host and finish it up.

There's not really any "visible" way to tell if the diode is dead other than turning it on! :p

The diode itself should be fine, as long as it didn't get ridiculously hot. Try to keep soldering times to a min, and you'll be doing great. :)
