OK everyone pull out your green laser on Jan. 8th at 10pm eastern time.
Point it at the dark part of the moon and we will see if our combined lasers will show up.

See you on the moon.

GBD, if lasers don't show up on the moon, then HOW DO YOU EXPLAIN THIS?!

Tide goes in, tide goes out. Never a miscommunication. You can't explain that!

my laser is too powerful to shoot at the moon, as it might blow it up (it's 500 petawatts)

sorry

While the reflected light won't be perceivable in the slightest from here I do like the idea of an entire continent of random people all beaming into the sky at a common point of reference.
With some of the higher powered lasers in the hands of amateurs it might make for a neat news story. Can you imagine if it goes viral and the government becomes aware that hundreds of beams of light all went on at the same time across a country pointing up into the sky ? Does anyone live near one of those weird hermit type guys that always has a UFO story to tell ? You could let it slip that something is going to happen on that night.(But don't say what so he has time to get really paranoid first.)
Any idea where the space station will be in it's orbit at that time ? Perhaps they can enjoy the display and comment on what they see.

It could make for an enjoyable spectacle.

And you might be able to place where your nearest LPF member lives by looking for the beams around you.

Yep. It could be quite a show.

Never gonna happen buddy

:shhh::shhh::shhh: Don't ruin dreams with logic and science.

Or Santa's gonna put you on the naughty list:eg::san:

@shorty - There is a member map... works much better than looking around for laser beams, and you'd need one heck of a vantage point:tinfoil:

I know your trolling, but i'll explain it anyway. :p

The answer is Rayleigh scattering. During a lunar eclipse, the only light that's reaching the moon from the sun has passed through the earth's atmosphere, where, due to Rayleigh scattering, most the the shorter wavelengths have been scattered, so only the longer wavelengths actually make it to the moon to be reflected back, hence the reddish brown look.

This concludes today's SCIENCE!

"There is a member map... works much better than looking around for laser beams, and you'd need one heck of a vantage point"

But that member's map is full of errors. RHD is still showing up in the north.:p
Besides, it would still be neat to have lots of members all doing something the same at the same time.
Using the members map shows that some areas will have a higher density than others and some members just might be able to post something like, "Hey, I saw a beam from just north of me.Was that you xxxx?"
It could be harmless fun.

And like I said, if it gets a few news stories going it might go viral. One news station picking up that another reported the very same thing on the same night and then the resulting hype that could build up on just what it was and WHY it happened...I could spend hours with a stupid grin on my face knowing the answer and hearing all the stupid speculations and conjecture. The stuff of "conspiracy theories" in the making.
C,mon. Where's your sense of adventure ?
All it takes is a couple of minutes outside with your personal choice of laser from your collection.
Just remember to factor in the time difference. (Or go out every hour for 4 hours to shine into the sky if you want. Might make the neighbors think twice about you in confusion.)

I will write it down on my calender and make sure to pop outside for 5 minutes if enough interest is indicated here.

No one near me is a LPF member :( I don't even see people with lasers around here like everyone else claims they do.

Anyway if you go laze the moon make sure there's no planes in between.
