At this rate, we can expect all sales on laser diodes to be restricted by next year. Let's just hope kipkay doesn't do something stupid.

LOL!! Overreact much? The sh#t hit the fan the instant these diodes were introduced to the public.. everything that has happened and will happen is simply a fairly predictable response. These diodes and systems containing them have already been written about on lots of gadget/geek sites.. this is just another on the list. No change from the way things already are from what I see.

The fact that you have to build it yourself will drive away many of the worst candidates, chances are most of them already have a broken arctic anyway...

new comers will almost always fail their first attempt. The $100 wasted on this attempt will lead them away....

Like what?
Buying a 808nm 20W+ power diode bar on ebay and direct drive it with a lithium cell or two?

How many morons have a app. $200 budget?

Hey there.

I don't agree with this statement. Only because I saw a similar video on youtube (actually the one from Kipkay) I ended up researching more about this topic which lead me to a tutorial for for blu-ray laser and eventually here.

There are a lot of people who are genuinely interested in lasers and not only for the sake of burning things from the distance. You will have more people finding out about this (and other) forums and learning about wonders and dangers of lasers. And there are as many idiots too and no matter how much you try to keep this hobby of ours closed if something bad can happen it will. Might as well try to educate as many people as you can in the meantime.

Was that video made by a member here?

The video is made by Styropyro who is a member and a good fellow. He should not be blamed.

Nothing bad will come of it.

Yeah.... The video was made by Styropyro...

The video has 2 potential problems that I noticed...

1) the LD was not properly seated below flush...
2) the FLexDrive was not tested for output current before
hooking it to the LD..

[EDIT]
Maybe that will increase the failure rate of some builds...

@ gillza... you HOPE "Nothing bad will come of it. "

That's How Styro is weeding out the dumb asses. When They blow the 1st LD they'll quit trying. The serious peeps will do more research before giving it a go.

You have to give Styro a credit , at the end there is a good warning about safety and a note
"If you do not use goggles with this laser, you are an idiot" I really like that, Styro my man!

Besides, how many folks have such money to spend, after all, a "laser" in minds of 70% of people is a $1 toy, not a $100+ device capable of inflicting harm and causing serious damage.

I do not think we should not do tutorials.... we should not keep the too detailed though, I agree with Jerry.

To be honest Jerry I don't think anyone is going to blow a diode no matter what they set their driver at! I just maxed mine out to see what would happen...

Over 1,300mW is what happened!

I didn't see any insulation tape to prevent this so... Maybe the driver will short out on the pill or heatsink and cause intermittent problems leading to...

Laser dim - look into laser - laser bright - user blind!

You gots to have at least some experience in electronics and soldering in order to build the thing, not any newb is capable of soldering tiny driver to tiny diode's pins without overheatin' something, besides, bad solder joint (weak, too much solder hence a short somewhere ) and the driver dies, AFAIK, flexdriver does not have overvoltage protection right?
