San Diego night lasers in the mid 90's?

Hey Guys,

Long shot question here, but does anyone from San Diego remember the laser beams shot out of a building in La Jolla during some summer nights? It must have been seriously powerful, as it was quite visible miles away as it disappeared over the ocean fog. I remember a green and maybe a red beam, sometimes reflected off mirrors on other buildings far away. I'm not sure how they got away with it, but the beams were never higher than the buildings themselves. Pretty cool stuff, I'm wondering how strong a green laser would need to be to have a thick visible beam ten miles away on a clear night.

IIRC those were High power Argons. I would guess they were at least 20W.

There was a similar "display" in Watkins Glen N.Y.

The laser was in the gorge (draws tourists from around the world)

The beam was directed over the town, and then over Seneca lake.

They also did a big laser show called "TimeSpell"

The building in San Diego was called the San Diego Design center located on Lusk Blvd in Mira Mesa. It is now a Qualcomm building. When I started working there in 1993 the lasers were still active. I don't remember them being red , the were green lasers and they were about 10 inch beams. The would shoot them at metal plates located around the parking lot that were mounted on top of light poles.

Who cares? Obviously I was looking for additional info also on who designed it. Believe it or not people search forums for old info. Maybe he will see it and come back. Don't be an ass.

Unfair. What's the point of saving old threads if new people are punished for reviving them with significant and pertinent information that's on topic? Why tell people to use the search function if commenting on old threads is unacceptable? I understand the problem of necroposting with a "me too" post. That's not what happened here. This guy answered the question. Just sayin'.

I remember over the years having a few friendly debates over necroposting. As long as you are adding something of value I don't see a problem. Why create a thread for the same topic every couple of years? If you are reviving a topic just for the sake of it, then yes. That sort of necroposting should be frowned upon.

I temp banned him because of his attitude. But you're probably right. I'll reduce the ban to a few days. You see I get reports from people all the time for necroposts. It's hard to please everyone.

You know Eidetical if you are ok with anyone being this rude then maybe lpf isn't the place for you. I honestly don't know why anyone would like this comment.

If you knew what Eidetic's day job is, and mine, you'd know that everything we make in new technology is based on old publications. Sometimes a hundred years old in my case. Good old Lord Rayleigh is a great physics read, he calculated much of future technology by hand in an age way before modern anything... Rayleigh's claim to fame is the background math to much of modern physics and optics. He died in 1919, is he "too old" to read?

Perhaps if your so concerned about having a higher post count of many tiny posts, then I should stay away and just read LPF on something like WAYBACK... I note as I return to LPF I see many, many messages from you about old posts. It seems to be a sensitive spot for you. Think About it. LPF archives a lot of information not found elsewhere.

I hate to use my senior status, relatively new person, but in this case I am speaking to you as a very senior old guy in the professional laser industry. My mentors were people most here would given both their balls to have known. I'm blessed to be able to share what they have taught me. I even more hate typing this line, but I will. You might want to find out whom your talking to before being so curt with people. It shows as very rude and will turn off new users.

Eidetic's contributions to preserve laser history are amazing. Where he gets to display that history is amazing. Where he is invited to show parts of that collection is amazing. What he is trusted to preserve is unbelievably priceless. He comes here to share it, and sharing that collection is his passion. Yes, we sort of know each other. (Hiya Bob)

That sig, is well, real... I've been working with lasers since 1984... I don't just "play with lasers", I use them to make materials to save lives and improve life on a day to day basis. I have a bad habit of building my own systems from scratch, I dont just buy assembled parts. I have juried, professional, academic publications. I have, personally, arranged for college scholarships for a few people here. Teach, I LOVE to teach... Forums can be a great way to get the word out and improve the world.

You come across as both dictatorial and rude, with a touch of very immature. If you ever ban Eidetic, the professional laser industry (Read Billions of Dollars) will lose any remaining respect for this forum, period. Believe it or not, big corporations recruit from here.

Heed my advice, you'll be less stressed and live longer....

You might want to PM Eidetic with an apology ASAP, CC me on it. He's a very nice person, very modest, too..

I get your points but let me make something clear. Your status and success in life does not matter to me. I am a mod on this forum and have the responsibility to make sure the rules are followed and that everyone is being taken care of. I handle spam and reports on an hourly basis. I don't have to keep an eye on morale but I make that a personal job as well. Sometimes I make mistakes and I like it when people point it out however I do not like being unnecessarily talked down to especially by members who think they have more importance than everyone else.
Eidetical has been banned (not by me) before on lpf and when he suddenly took it upon himself to openly make another account (breaking forum rules) instead of consulting with either myself, earsandeggs or ColdShadow (owner) I stuck up for him and asked to give him a second chance.
There was a condition though. He was to stay out of open arguments. He violated this a few times but I ignored it. If I were him I would be careful from now on and I would just stay out of it because we don't need more drama.
I hope this has clarified the situation.
