it will shut down if i leave mine on max it will over saturate the crystals
causing it to overheat its a 260 rpl and the optimal setting is 3 on mine, i can run it on 4-5 no problems but if i put it on say 7-9 it shuts off, my power sheet shows it puts out average of 291 on #3 so thats about where it stays ,and works great i might add

well some run thier optimum setting on 8 or 9 and anything set lower will not be putting out max mine was 3 its rated at 291 its 31 mw over what i paid for i asked for a 260 and i got a 291 almost a 300 I'm happy ;D

It's a 2.5watt IR diode. It gets pretty warm in there 
The fact that these things can run like 6minutes before they cut out is pretty remarkable.
You can get them this power that have a true 100% duty cycle. That's the Hercules from laser glow. But check out the size comparison, and you'll see why: http://www.laserpointerforums.com/forums/YaBB.pl?num=1208807959 they have active fans and HUGE heatsinks.

I think everyone gets adjustable. You don't have the safety key, but the ability to change power output to anything you want is just really cool.
It's a far cry from "anything you want" as there are a mere 9 settings. Of those nine, the latter 6 are almost identical.
For an RPL-300, it's more like 5-6. Essentially all the RPL units are the same, just the higher powers have better efficiency crystals, so the more powerful you can drive the diode before the crystals become saturated. But you already knew that

Even if you only ever plan on using it at the max setting, to get the highest output possible, you will still want the adjustable model as it allow you to "tune" the diode current so the crystals are not over-saturated with IR from the diode, which can actually reduce output. Plus the adjustable version gives you the option to run at lower powers. Even if you don't plan on doing so, it's nice to have that option if needed.

I have found that (contrary to popular opinion) you CAN have too much power, especially when using a laser indoors.
It is nice to have the option to turn it down.

Awe man! I didn't notice this thread first! Meth400, I think you should have continued with your "decision time" thread (or go post a conclusion) because that thread is still getting responses. Anyway, the adjustable tail cap is the way to go. At first you will probably want as much power as possible so you will probably test it's limits, but once you get a better feel for your laser you will find how it performs best under the optimal current level setting. I use mine at power level 7 (certificate suggests 6) and it runs consistent and strong for 10min no problem. If I set it to 9, it actually decreases a little power, and the unit gets much warmer much quicker and the battery drains much quicker as well. The RPL's have battery and diode beam-shut-off protection as my good friend John Lawson was explaining. My RPL only reaches the shut-off protection if I run it at power level 8 or 9 for ~5 min or so straight. Plus, if for some reason you wish to significantly decrease the output power, level 1-4 is quite less.
i have both tailcaps for my RPL and when i got mine, it was tested by Jack using the non-adjustable cap. its true, my laser runs best with the non-adjustable cap.
i have done many tests on all levels 1-9 but didnt get any readings which come anywhere near the readings i get with the non-adjustable cap.
so yeh, just stick to the optimum current level which is noted on the spec sheet, unless you want to lower the power when using indoors.

its ok ace32,i havent oreded one yet,still decieding....... just looked at the herc series.......... .............
pretty sure ill get a rpl300 adjustable though....lol it will look good sitting next to my x-105.
also got a reply from nova,no more nova seris lasers? bummer,they would have been my first choice.
