Yesterday I dug out my old vial of Rhodamine 590 Chloride laser dye that I've been hoarding since high school. Back then I wasn't able to finish my dye laser project due to lack of resources. Maybe I'll pick up the project again someday, but for now I made a small batch with some rubbing alcohol just to play around with. I forgot how purty it is when mixed... the powder is a dark rust red but as soon as I put a pinch of it in the alcohol it started leaving trails as it sunk to the bottom that were neon pink or yellow depending on the angle. Once fully dissolved it's pink with a yellow glow... the pics don't do it justice but it's a cool effect. The more ambient light there is the more it glows yellow and the pink gets harder to see.

I think I paid $25 for the 1 gram vial back in the day, but you don't need much of the powder to make a good sized batch of the stuff. I don't even know if it would lase properly in isopropyl alcohol but it lights up nice & bright with my new SF-AW210.
