^that's a good idea. and my guess is they could find a way to warm it up faster, butane torches or something.

I think the reason that civilian ships don't carry firearms (or at least they aren't supposed to) is that there is some sort of international law forbidding such ships to be armed, at least in some areas and situations. Also, most corporations that own cargo ships won't allow it, probably some sort of liability thing, who knows.

Which is stupid - then only the pirates will be armed.

As for the Active Denial system, apparently one of these devices has been purchased by a private shipping company, though the manufacturer hasn't disclosed the name of that company. So there may be a container ship out there with one of those things on board, but that system is far more expensive than this RGB laser, and doesn't have as much range either (the "civilian" version of it).

I agree, it's dumb. I think it's HMike who said "If you outlaw weapons, only outlaws will have weapons." or something like that. Sorry if I got it wrong. There's no way I will be in a small boat in pirate waters without some means of defense. And the active denial system looks very promising, it would be cool if they made these super portable. Like a tazer that "burns" people!

Unfortunately, it's a characteristic of HP halide lamps, cannot be changed.

But as alternative (but the cost is much more high) can be used a sea light lamp (how do you call them, the towers that signal dangers on the coasts ?) ..... BIG xenon continuous arc lapms, turns on in few seconds, and light like the sun :p :D

It's called a "lighthouse" lol. And I wasn't aware those used xenon lamps, I guess that could be cool. I saw a video recently about some kind of sodium lamp that was running at really high power levels, I'm not sure if that's new tech or not but either way I'm sure we'll find new light technology soon.

I saw one the U.S. Military is using to intimidate the enemy, and dazzle targets. It has a rangefinder so you don't blind who you're pointing at though.

Well, a naval hand-operated search projector, or an helicopter search projector, that uses a xenon short-arc lamp of 250W, typically, produces an intensity of light (at the source point) of almost 15 millions candles ..... now, imagine to use a projector that mount one of these 15KW lighthouses beasts, with a decent parabolic mirror and a fresnel lamp ..... not a laser, but ..... :p

EDIT: those lamps are also used in those megascreens cinema projectors, like drive-in and similars ..... but lamp and power supply costs an eye and a lung :p :D

god damn it, that was my idea! I'd been thinking for a long time about making a green deal with a precision motor focus adjustment and rangefinder... the problem was I didn't have cash for R&D LOL
